Where do these shoes fit on the style spectrum? Mary Janes

Obviously flat Mary Janes are more current, but could I be deemed stylish at all in these? I really like them and my feet do like Clarks for fit and comfort. It's not for everyday wear, it's for work events. I just don't love the feel of flat shoes for professional or dressy occasions.

I'm 54 and not the tallest. Would wear with smart black trousers and a fabulous blouse.

Pic on it's way - black leather Mary Jane type shoes with a ca 6cm heel

I'm not crazy about them. Maybe you need a different shaped toe and a smaller heel?

Gettingbysomehow · 17/10/2025 10:52

They feel a bit old fashioned for some reason. Nice enough though, depends what you are wearing them with.
I have some Mary Janes in Leopard from office but the heel is about half that and the shape is a bit more modern.
Clarke's are comfortable though, I like the half sizes and wide fit.

MorrisZapp · 17/10/2025 10:55

Yes I like a slightly smaller heel. Appreciate the opinions.

Does modern mean a more rounded toe?

I can't really see what shape the toe is but to me they are absolutely fine for work events.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 17/10/2025 11:55

Are these the shoes? Clarks Chorus shoes? They come up on several sites which look as if they're selling old Clark's stock, rather than direct from Clark's. They look dated - it's the high, chunky heel and the toe shape which is a bit "Irregular Choice" in the way it lifts up at the front.

I’ve got those shoes in gray, I was wearing them about 8 years ago. I loved them! So comfortable! I don’t think they were ever stylish but I would feel pretty dated putting them on now, I think it’s the heel shape.

For a work event though where being smart was the most important thing I’d pull them out again.

HorribleHisTories15 · 17/10/2025 19:32

I think that they are refreshingly different to a lot of shoes around, especially for special events. They draw interest, but would not detach from your main attire. I know that so many people write that heels are out of current fashion, but heels can be stylish and bring an additional style element to an outfit that clompers or trainers cannot bring.

Go for it @OP!

CharlotteCChapel · 18/10/2025 07:26

I like them, they look good for a dressier occasion

dudsville · 18/10/2025 08:34

I really like them, and I'm generally not a fan of black shoes. I think that's because it's so easy for them to look boring. These are sweet and fun whilst having some maturity.

WearyCat · 18/10/2025 08:43

The more important thing is that you like them! I think they’d be great with the right trousers or a skirt and blouse.

Financeisfun · 18/10/2025 08:43

I'd say they are dated.

I was thinking pointed or square.

Shetlands · 18/10/2025 08:57

What they say to me is 1972 and I had a pair just like them. I love them and I think they're capturing a trend of 60s/70s revival.

HopingForTheBest25 · 18/10/2025 09:52

I think they're cute. Flat Mary-Jane's look very ugly to me and there seems to be a current trend for long, skinny shoes/boots with a kitten heel, which imo makes the foot look out of proportion. So I wouldn't necessarily be swayed by what is technically 'in fashion'. Go with what you like and what suits you.
Comfort in shoes is very important. It takes me a really long time to properly break in shoes so that I can stand to wear them all day - if I've gone to that effort, I'm going to wear them for as long as I can!
I see lots of women at work wearing heels and styles that, post covid, we thought would be gone for good. These women look smart and professional and comfortable.

I think 'fashion' doesn't have to be rigid and adhering to a prescribed style - it's mixing and matching trends with what you personally like.

Excuse me modelling Mary Jane's in my pyjamas. I love these by office.

I think you either love MJs or hate them 😬😬😬

Sagaciously · 19/10/2025 14:20

Very dated.

I like those. I don't like the OP's high heeled ones.

Deschampsia · 19/10/2025 22:51

Where do these shoes fit on the style spectrum?
I'd say 1950s: I'm thinking of the era of very full skirts and small waists. Very trad wifey, somehow. I know sod all about fashion history though, so I've no idea where my subconscious is getting this image from, nor whether it's remotely accurate...

Yes, this. Who cares if something is ‘in fashion’ or not so long as you like it and it’s comfortable :)

Rainbowdrop22 · 19/10/2025 23:52

I love these! I don’t think I’d care if they’re dated or not, I’d wear them.

I love those!

Tbh if they are super comfortable you will look better and more confident in them than a flat pair. A slightly long trouser so you just see the toe and heel, I guarantee you no one will notice. Especially if you have on a fabulous blouse & a hair blow dry.

I was into the same style then I found Kurt Geiger mary Janes. Flatter toe and block hope heel. I have cream colour and black patent. Love them they are exactly the right height heel for me
