Spending £1k on me!

I won a national award for my field of work and the prize was a shopping voucher worth the equivalent of £1,000. I'm not in the UK. I'm 57, size 10, work in a very formal environment and spend most of my leisure time in shorts and t shirts, even in winter as it's still 20c or higher in the day time.

The mall I can use the voucher in has all expected international brands. It's valid for a year. I'm tempted by a Dyson hairdryer or Airstrait.

What would you get? Winter coats, boots etc not needed! I'm otherwise ok for electronics. House doesn't need anything (it's rented and when we move back we'll end up giving most of out stuff away). So, do I hit Sephora and my fave clothes shops?!

How about a designer handbag that you normally wouldn't be able to afford?

TheSandgroper · 16/10/2025 09:51

I always say a good handbag is an investment. Can you get good leather courts and a good matching handbag?

Huge congratulations for your award.

HansHolbein · 16/10/2025 10:00

Congratulations! I would buy a handbag, shoes and coat.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/10/2025 10:01

Dyson hairdryer and vacuum if you don’t have one and you do your own cleaning

MavisBarrel · 16/10/2025 11:03

I would probably buy some jewellery

thornbury · 16/10/2025 11:12

I don't do my own cleaning 😳

I hadn't really thought about jewellery and I have a lot of bags (small weekend ones like the Uniqlo crescent bag, mainly).

I'd get lovely new underwear, swimwear and I'd buy some Chantecaille foundation/tinted moisturiser.

Goldpanther · 16/10/2025 11:41

I would buy something special that I could wear everyday, and would last me for years. I've had vouchers previously and things I have brought are:

Diamond stud earrings (I wear these everyday, to the gym, to bed etc)
Fur coat, comes out every winter
Expensive handbag, for everyday use
Nice mirror
Elevated basics - silk tops, cashmere jumper etc.

Calmondeck · 16/10/2025 12:01

I’d get a beautiful piece of jewellery that you can use all the time, and feel the glow of your career triumph. One day someone will receive it and say my mum/grandma/aunt/godmother was a champion in X field, I wear this as inspiration/to remember her/reminder of the value of hard work etc

Letsskidaddle · 16/10/2025 12:10

Congratulations!

I’d go for jewellery and/or a watch. Something you’ll wear and see everyday to remind you how you brilliant you are. Or a fancy pen, but I love writing and do a lot, you might not!

If there was any change, and I ran out of ideas or was limited by choice I’d tick off a few Christmas presents and then treat myself from elsewhere.

For me it wouldn’t be a handbag because I don’t really use them and wouldn’t want to spend all the money on something to sit in the wardrobe.

What a fabulous dilemma!

MulberryPeony · 16/10/2025 14:11

Oh congratulations on your award. I’d be temped by a high value item or a few that I wouldn’t normally be able to justify buying. Happy shopping!

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 16/10/2025 16:38

I love my Dyson hairdryer / air wrap. Would definitely consider that. I also like the idea of a watch or ring you could have long term.

Personally I'd invest in that plus some things I wouldn't usually buy like high end skincare, haircare, makeup and toiletries. I'd probably buy some nice trainers too.

I wouldn't buy a bag. I'm not a designer bag person.

Sadly isn't as hard to spend £1k as I'd like it to be!

WatchingTheDetective · 16/10/2025 16:59

If you bought something like a hairdryer, you'd be able to use it when you were back home, wouldn't you? I hate to think of you leaving it behind!

I'd buy jewellery, I think.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 16/10/2025 17:25

Jewellery from an independent designer. Definitely not a bag.

OhDear111 · 17/10/2025 13:59

Can the prize be used at an independent jewellery designer? Sadly £1000 won’t buy more than teeny tiny diamond earrings. I might consider a watch. Or a handbag. If you only have inexpensive ones, £1000 will get you a decent brand, but not a top brand in leather. What about a purse? Hermes earrings and bangles come in this price range. Or 2 Hermes scarves! If I had totally free choice, I’d be off to Hermes’!
