What style of winter coat suits you? I’m after a wool/wool mix long winter coat and I just cannot find one which works for me!

I have quite a small frame but not tiny. Carry weight mainly on my bottom half and have a high waist.

i love the oversized ones but they just swamp me. I only shop on line and have ordered so many that I’m getting fed up. Can anyone give any pointers please?

I think coats are massive at the moment. Even the tailored ones look great on the hanger but are enormous on - not long but just big everywhere.
I ordered one off Vinted, a fitted top shop coat from years ago that fits nicely. Older wool costs tend to be better quality too.

Drivingmissrangey · 16/10/2025 08:05

If I want smart I tend to go for a wrap style, or one that at least has a belt. For warmth I go for a slim fitting down coat, if they are fitted enough that doesn’t need a belt.

I have an oversized borg type jacket. I know I look ridiculous in it but I just love how cosy it is so I don’t care.

I'm a size 8 and 5.4" - I find Reiss tailoring on coats work best for me. The oversized look swamps me too, I prefer the fitted tailoring that Reiss offers.

Northerndoglover · 16/10/2025 09:50

I’m 5’4” and 8/10 depending on my mood/TOTM. I’m at the stage of my life (44) where I prefer oversized/cuddly so I like what’s in now but I have to agree with PP about Reiss/wrap coats. I had a stunning short, black, wrap Reiss 100% wool coat that was really neat on the shoulders. I also had a pink Jaeger (from Marks) long wrap coat that was really smart. Both fitted really well and did not have that slightly causal, oversized look that’s in now. Jaeger have a wrap coat in now, I can’t tell online how fitted it is though.

I think Hobbs fit well too but can look dated if you aren’t careful.

Both of those beautiful coats got sold and left my house sadly. Although I think I’d struggle to fit into that Reiss one now, it was tiny!

I'm a little bit shorter but similar size with a high waist. I got an olive green Ted Baker 3/4 length wrap coat from Vinted and really love it. They're a bit overdone probably but the shape and draping of the fabric is so nice and it feels really warm. The neck can be open or a sort of funnel neck. It's like this one but dark green.

I also have a shorter felt red wrap coat from French connection that's a similar shape a bit like this (again, neck can be worn open or sort of funnel neck).

Ah that’s where I’m going wrong! Haven’t tried any wrap coats. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction.

I’m not exactly the same size 5’4, 6-8 but I have the same swamping problem.

I have a fitted coat and some single breasted coats. Teddy coats don’t work at all.

Tie front wrap coats swamp me too I think they mainly work on people who are very tall.

Shambles123 · 16/10/2025 11:16

I can't belt coats, I look like Im wearing a dressing gown! Have a long, slightly oversized green one and tie belt at back. It's a statement! I wear shorter ones a lot, like faux fur type. Also wear horrible duvet coat thing for slepping around after my kids at their hobbies.

AnotherVice · 16/10/2025 11:16

I have a shorter ‘long’ one from Mint Velvet, white wool.

Twilightstarbright · 16/10/2025 11:39

5ft5.5 and a size 8 but small frame. I wear a Ted Baker wrap coat for work and a Sweaty Betty Nimbus for sports mum activities and accept I don’t look slim in it but am warm!

henlake7 · 16/10/2025 13:20

I agree, wrap style or belted long coats always seem to look good (Im same height/size). I got a couple of lovely plaid ones off Vinted last year, a wool trench and a princess style coat, and they look really smart.
Having said that though Im a fan of the oversized look and will happily wear something 3 sizes too big coz I care more about how I feel then how I look most days!

dailyconniptions · 16/10/2025 13:25

You're. I know, I know, but aarrgghh!

GinSwiggers · 16/10/2025 14:08

I was going to suggest 'buttonless' wrap coats .
I don't need another coat so I won't be buying.

Look at Mango- they have some nice ones. Also J Lewis (own brand or just search wrap coats), Boden have nice knee length wool coats.

If I had a lot to spend I'd probably go for a classic Max Mara navy or grey shade wrap over coat. Someone I know has one in 100% cashmere and it will last forever.

EleanorMc67 · 16/10/2025 15:17

I have a few Jigsaw coats - my favourite being a green wool wrap one. Their cuts don't tend to be too oversized. They have straight/wrap/raglan styles that are all classic & well cut. Pricier than some other high-street shops, but much less than Max Mara etc! I have always bought mine in the sale or on eBay/Vinted.

This is a nice one.

Can you try anything on in shops? As Jigsaw is usually slightly generous, so it would be best to check if you're usually a 10 or 12. Not sure what colour you're after either, but if it's going to be your main/only winter coat, then I suppose navy/black/camel/grey (I have lots of coats in different colours as I love winter coats!!).

On eBay at the moment are: https://ebay.us/m/g1dVNN

Classic dark grey wool.

The grey city coat in 12.

Though it is probably more oversized than their usual cut so a small might be better.

That re Jigsaw coat would drown a petite person.

EleanorMc67 · 16/10/2025 15:45

For versatility this one is my favourite - & it's starting at under £50!!!

I really like the camel flecks in the tweed - makes it more interesting than a plain black or navy coat.

I’m 5’5” and size 8. I have a lovely Reiss wrap coat which fits well with the belt tied. Also some nice Maje and Sandro ones bought on Vinted
