Is 5 foot 4" Petite?

Deggy · 15/10/2025 13:25

I'm slightly prompted another S&B thread here, but I'm convinced I used to be 5 foot 7 " and always considered myself quite tall. However, I'm losing height as I go through menopause and I'm only a shade over 5 foot 4 now.

It hasn't occurred to me to ever buy petite clothes, but I'm constantly sending clothes back and moaning about how ridiculously long everything is Grin

Am I really starting to edge into 'petite'?? I always imagined petite clothes were for much daintier looking women than me!

I’m 5’4” and never had to buy specific petite clothing, but I do sometimes find that regular length trousers are too long if I want to wear with flats. I also think regular length is longer recently because I’m having to buy a short length a lot more often than I used to

TheOGCCL · 15/10/2025 18:39

I definitely wouldn’t rule out petite. But agree with pps it’s about proportions.

I’m between five four and five five but my legs are about 27 inches so petite bottoms work best for me. I think, although you don’t measure the same way, my arms are short too and I also have a small skeleton so petite tops would theoretically work but then there’s my disproportionate 30FF bust so I don’t tend to go for those.

Afterthesun · 15/10/2025 19:07

I am 5’4’’ and petite ranges don’t fit me as the arms are always a bit short. Even when I was very slim everything just felt skimpy and not quite right.

How can you have lost 3 inches, unless you have significant osteoporosis?

Exactly! Three whole inches? Is that possible?

HoolleeeyHelllonabus · 15/10/2025 20:15

5ft4 sounds petite to me, I am 6ft 3 with 36 inch legs.

When I find myself in the petite section by accident I hope that noone spots me and run out 🤣

keepincool · 15/10/2025 20:26

I'm just short of 5'4" but have short legs and always need to take regular length trousers up. I buy a lot of petite trousers and skirts, and some longer style dresses, from the high street and they are a good length for me.

M&S petite sizing is inside leg of 74cm (crotch to floor), which is my leg length, and extra short is 69cm inside leg.

UpMyself · 15/10/2025 20:33

@HoolleeeyHelllonabus , it's not. We're regular.
XP had very long legs and know how difficult it is to find long inside leg trousers and jeans. It's probably much harder for women.

Italiangreyhound · 15/10/2025 20:36

"In fashion and clothing, a petite size is a standard clothing size designed specifically for women 163 cm (5 ft 4 in) and under.[1][2][3] This categorization is not solely based on a woman's height, but also takes into account the proportions of her body."

UpMyself · 15/10/2025 20:41

It varies by brand, and all the ones I've ever come across have been 5'2" and under or 5'3" and under.

I'm the average height for a UK woman, and petite does not fit me.

Women shrink in from 60s onwards but OP is only menopause age,

I guess your mum shrank between 60-80?

I'm mid 40s and I've lost 2" since my late teens. Suspect it's my appalling posture, combined with likely scoliosis. My mum has it too.

Gettingbysomehow · 15/10/2025 20:47

Im 5.4 wear 30 to 31 length trousers and Im a size 12. I don't consider myself petite. Petite clothes are all too short for me.

Missj25 · 15/10/2025 20:57

Aluna · 15/10/2025 13:31

Also it depends on your size/weight.

Size 6 + 8 will be shorter than a 12 for instance.

Agreed , I’m 5/4 & slim , size small , Uk 8 sometimes 10 depends on shop & the bigger sizes are longer ..
I’m regular leg or 32 inch for heels , & jackets/ blazers are too short on my arms if I buy petit but perfect every place else 🤷🏻‍♀️

1clavdivs · 15/10/2025 21:03

I'm 5'4'', 30" leg and size 10. Regular sizing has always been spot on for me so must have been based on a 30" leg. I've noticed though recently that regular has started to be a bit longer than it used to be. That said, petite is just a touch too short in most brands. I can get away with it, but it's not quite right.

JDM625 · 15/10/2025 21:07

Not really relevant, but I'm 168cm (5ft 6) and always found the regular range fine for trousers. The last few years though, I've had to check I haven't accidently picked up a 'long' pair, because they seem to drag on the floor!

I'm sure my legs and arms are in proportion to my height, but often find jackets too short in the arms. I wouldn't consider myself to have orangutang long arms, but maybe I do? 😬

FancyCatSlave · 15/10/2025 21:15

In my experience no, I am 5ft 4 but petite things are cut all wrong for me. A bit too short, a bit too short in arms, crotch, waist in wrong place etc.

I do have 2 petite maxi dresses but they aren’t fitted. Regular is too long so I am always hunting for the elusive “short” which is longer than petite but shorter than regular. Next jeans are great for that but never in stock!

Chiaseedling · 15/10/2025 21:17

I’m 5ft4 (maybe slightly under) but not petite which is 5ft3 and under. I’ve got a long body so dresses don’t fit right on the boobs. Maybe trousers would be ok, some are really long.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 15/10/2025 21:39

I’m 5’2” with long legs and a short body so I buy regular. Short/petite trousers flap around my ankles.

My mum shrunk four inches over 20 yes, she's in her 80s. Perfectly healthy bone density. I think you can easily shrink, gravity gradually takes its toll. The bits in between the bones in your back degenerate over time.

that is way over the average shrinkage. And by menopause age 3 inches is real cause for investigation.

bumbaloo · 15/10/2025 21:45

WestwardHo1 · 15/10/2025 13:49

You shrink if you have scoliosis.

Ok but that is a specific medical condition. It’s strinkage due to curvature. It’s not shrinkage due to old age per se

SushiForMe · 15/10/2025 21:49

5’4 here and petite usually fits me. I also have narrow shoulders and hips though. And short-ish legs.

HellsBells13 · 15/10/2025 21:49

Definitely proportion. My inside leg from crotch to heel I measure 31inches yet I am 5ft 1inch. I wear standard trousers and petite jackets. I was made from the odds bin.

3luckystars · 15/10/2025 21:51

Depends on the length of your legs.
But

but

but

how have you lost 3 inches ???????!!!??????

DiscoBob · 15/10/2025 21:59

bumbaloo · 15/10/2025 21:41

Maybe. It wouldn't be a sign of something life threatening surely?

3luckystars · 15/10/2025 21:59

Right. I just reread your post and you said that you lost a ‘significant amount of weight’

I saw a guy in tv years ago and he was enormous, he was so obese that when he lost a huge amount of weight, he lost 3 inches off his height as he had so much fat on his actual head.

is that what happened because there is no way you could lose 3 inches due to ‘menopause’

I know they say we become invisible but the previously petite women would disappear altogether if this was the case.

GinandBearsIt · 15/10/2025 22:05

limescale · 15/10/2025 18:07

AI says after age 40.

So, that's 4cm (just over an inch) by the time you're 80.

(4 decades x 1 cm.)

Not 3 or 4 inches in your 50s.
