Struggling so much for "ordinary" clothes

I'm a tall, slim woman in my 50s, with a reasonable sense of my own style, which is basically "presentable" 🤣. I like nice quality clothes and try to avoid looking too dated, but I'm not follower of fashion and I'm not going to wear anything that's uncomfortable for anyone.

I can do smart for work and dressy quite easily, but I'm really struggling with casual atm. I like wide leg trousers, they suit me and have been wearing them smart for years, but I'm really struggling to find wide leg jeans I like.

I also need some everyday tshirts (long and short sleeved). I'd like fitted with some interesting design or slogan. I particularly like a feminist or motivational slogan or an outdoorsy design, but id be open to anything really. I really can't find such a thing anywhere.

Where do you get nice quality fitted tshirts that aren't completely plain? And why isn't that good quality tshirts always seem to look "frumpy"?

What about trying Lucy and Yak?

Holluschickie · 14/10/2025 09:25

Jeans: Levis ribcage wideleg
Tshirts: Rapanui. Slogans + plain.

Sparks do good quality feminist tshirts

Hmm. I have one, but the print came off really quickly.....and they use "unisex" shaped tshirts!

Oliver Bonas?

drspouse · 14/10/2025 11:29

The Man Who Has It All - they do Unisex or Men's (you can guess why!), feminist slogans, hard wearing. I buy Cat Dad for DH, and I have Girly Swot with a Lady Hale spider for me.

Ok, regardless of your lack of interest in ‘fashion’ you are going to look dated in fitted, slogan covered t shirts. That’s why you can’t find them in better quality shops right now.

Simeon Farrar

does fantastic printed t shirts (long lasting and a joy to wear) but they’re deliberately oversized.

I thought I needed fitted tops to balance the wide leg jeans?

But where are you seeing them with ‘motivational’ slogans?

Anyway. ‘Ordinary clothes’ to me mean the sort of thing

Community Clothing

sells. Good plain clothes that can be mixed with fancier things (nice boots for instance) for casual days.

Uniqlo is the obvious choice on a lower budget; Cos casual wear is about the same price as CC; Margaret Howell MHL is hugely good value in the sales.

Holluschickie · 14/10/2025 13:07

Motivational slogans are deeply demotivating.
I don't see them on 50 year olds usually. We have run out of ideals by then!🙂

Disko Kids

Arcticsway · 14/10/2025 13:30

Uniqlo. I am 50+, I like presentable comfortable clothes, and I buy most of my clothes from Uniqlo now, from t-shirts to trousers and coats.

spoonbillstretford · 14/10/2025 13:53

I quite like Superdry Osaka t-shirts and Urban Outfitters t-shirts and tops, I'm also 50 and slim. I like a nice skinny T or fitted top. Desigual also have some nice tops.

Jeans - TU, Boden, Next, M&S even.

LadySuzanne · 14/10/2025 13:56

You mentioned "outdoorsy". Do you like moths?

I have been flamed for this before but i get a lot of my t shirts from Temu. They have lots of interesting pic or slogan ones and the quality is actually surprisingly good for the price. I got a pack of three, one with a big daisy on saying flower, one with big pink heart and one with 3 bronze hearts on. I also have one saying 'There is nothing I can't do, except reach the top shelf, I can't do that' and another saying 'In my defence I was left unsupervised'

BatsatHalloween · 14/10/2025 14:17

Black and Beech for the t-shirts
Also, shop independent on Etsy
Fatface and Joules do nice wide leg jeans and dungarees

Kurkara · 14/10/2025 14:45

Commiserations, OP.
Ten years ago I could go to the markets and find fitted t-shirts with screen prints on them from all sorts of funky artists.
I'm so sad that fashion phase has passed.

thedevilinablackdress · 14/10/2025 15:10

Slogan debate aside, I'd look at Rapanui, Community Clothing, Finisterre

TheOGCCL · 14/10/2025 15:49

Its not my vibe but have you looked at Joanie?

I got this in Jigsaw recently for long sleeve (size down to get fitted)
