Thehop · 13/10/2025 19:58

I'm losing weight and sagging. I know a cream won't help that but a side effect is also dehydration so I figure I need to up my game:

can anyone tell me what I should be looking for please? I've read about Korean skincare being great. Have used small doses of testimonies for a while in a skin and me doser:

guess I need at least a wash/cleanser, moisturiser and do I need serums?

sorry to sound daft, just very overwhelmed!

Small doses of tretinoin sorry about that

Ohhh watching with interest. I'm over fifty and suddenly I am awful on a morning. All puffy and crepey under eyes.

Wondering if it's a drink more water thing rather than creams?

LadyLapsang · 13/10/2025 20:49

What is your current skincare routine and what is your budget?

CountFucula · 13/10/2025 20:50

I am EVANGELICAL about vitamin c serum - I use cerave

Arlanymor · 13/10/2025 20:51

Oh I’m following too. My HRT dose was increased recently and my skin is very cross about it. I’m using all Aveeno products in an attempt to get it back under control but it’s not quite doing the trick.

MontythePrince · 13/10/2025 20:53

Le Roche posay do a free online consultation and advise what products to use, without any obligation to buy. It would give you an idea what active ingredients your skin type needs

Istanbol · 13/10/2025 21:13

I love Beauty of Joeson’s serums for adding moisture. I’m using their Glow Deep Serum and have noticed a big difference in the feel of my skin since I started a few weeks ago. Also rate their spf.

Arlanymor · 13/10/2025 21:25

@Thehop I might try Paula’s Choice - they do online consultations and have sample sizes - I used them for a while
when I worked abroad in a remote location and there was nothing but Nivea to buy - and not the whole range, just literally the blue tub! - and they were one of the few companies that posted stuff there. They were good but not cheap. I would definitely try some more samples… maybe next month as I’ve just bought a new laptop so I’m poor this month.

OfKitten · 13/10/2025 21:32

Do you have to talk about yourself like that? "dried out old bat"?

I really dont want to derail the thread - sorry. It's just really damaging talking like that, for you and others.

Sal820 · 13/10/2025 21:33

I use a cream cleanser - never water - normally Green people.

On my suddenly horribly dry peri facial skin I use Heavenly organics Rose and geranium face and eye cream which has saved it. The orange and lime body butter is divine as well.

She put an exclamation mark - using humour is fine surely? It’s self deprecation and tongue in cheek. Not everything has to be deadly serious. I’m also 46 and frankly sometimes I feel like a dried out old bat!

Or get some resilience. 'Really damaging' honestly, - we'll live.

From another (previously) dried out old bat.

It sounds ridiculously simple but sometimes things are too obvious to notice. Drink more water.

In terms of skincare, a rotating schedule of tretinoin, vit c and glycolic acid should do the trick. Use SPF every day.

Sadly, I really do need to. I struggle with it. I had a gastric sleeve in June so I have to sip rather than have drinks or j feel quite sick. I've always been rubbish with water though:

Rather embarrassingly, I use whatever face wash me or my teen sons have around: an old clarinet foaming cleanser that's not empty or their salicylic one. I don't mind soap either. I know I'm sorry 🙈

I use any moisturiser: some jars of L'Oréal lying around, and some samples I've had in gifts or glossy boxes shared at work:

I do buy skin and me daily doser as I panicked and signed up for it but don't always remember to use it every day.

I'm so sorry. I'm quite self deprecating and it's an odd sense of humour: I grew up with brothers.

apologies for causing offense.

You didn’t, it’s normal. Some people are over sensitive and feel the need to tell everyone.

Thehop · 13/10/2025 22:09

really sound and sensible advice thank you so much. Will make a real effort and look into glycolic and a good SPF now. Bit C mentioned a few times too.

You need a basic routine to start. You can adjust as you go.

PM:
Cleanse. Idy, for my dry older skin i think a balm cleanser is good. Inuse Farmacy green clean ut its pricey. Elemis is good too. Bioma do a much more reasonable version which is well liked. I think cera ve just launched one too which I plan to check out.

Serum - retinol. You say you have tret? Fine, but make sure you are introducing it slowly. Any redness or irritation, stop for a few days.

Good night cream after. I love the hydro ra.ge from.Neutrogena. v nourishing without being greasy.

AM
Splash face with water or use a light foaming cleanser in shower.
Serum: a good all rounder like clarins double.serum is good. If your skin feels dry huy a cheap hylaronix acid Serum too. A vitamin c serum is a good choice as well ans you can go from £10-£250!

Moisteriser. I tend to use whatever is around. Often nivea. I like to.use ones with spf in already.

MabelMoo23 · 14/10/2025 09:41

The most important thing to remember about using retinol / tret is that you MUST wear SPF every single day. I mean ideally you should anyway but definitely with any retinol

Yes, I agree. It really jumped out at me.

Platypusdiver · 14/10/2025 13:33

I slather my face in weleda skin food. Really thick and greasy, but my face is always well hydrated. Much more now than when I was younger and got stubborn dry spots that would catch my make up.
