Outfit for Graduation

Help!

I need an outfit to wear for my graduation on Tuesday. My gown will be black, with a burgundy and navy hood, and then one of those black square hats. All the guidance we've been given is something with a button to attach the gown to. I have zero clue.

I've spent a frantic few hours in town and have come home with this: Kylie Tux Jumpsuit | Phase Eight UK | I love it. It fits me like it was made for me. It curves in all the right places. It has pockets. But, now I'm home, I'm worried it's too much for a morning event. Part of me is like 'dammit I got a masters degree! With distinction! Sod too much'. But still...

Thoughts please?

Perfect and definitely not too much. It’s a huge celebration a graduation. Much better to choose something classy like this IMO than nightclub gear in pastels or garish colours as some do!

I love this outfit looks lovely for graduation. Have a lovely day and well done great achievement

Mumwithbaggage · 12/10/2025 14:50

Perfect! And many congratulations! Take some safety pins in case your gown needs pinning.

Motorina · 12/10/2025 16:22

Thank you all - that's super reassuring. @EvelynBeatrice - I'm 50 (and have completed the masters whilst working full time) so clubbing gear was never on the cards! I'm just having a crisis of confidence is all.

No need - perfect choice. Many congratulations to you on a magnificent achievement. I take my hat off to you. Enjoy the day.

Well done!! I graduated with a Master's too at the same age and your outfit is perfect.

Have an amazing day, take lots of pictures.

Absolutely love this. Does not matter it’s in the morning, everyone tends to dress up for graduations.

ShaunaOfTheDead · 12/10/2025 20:07

It’s gorgeous! And congratulations!

I was at a couple of graduations this summer and the women were exceedingly well-dressed and dressed up.

InSpainTheRain · 12/10/2025 21:35

Well done! Many congrats on your Masters. I think the jumpsuit is perfect. We went to my son's graduation just over a year ago and there were people very dressed up (as well as some not so dressed up). To be honest I felt a bit underdressed although when I chose my outfit I was worried it was too much. So I say go for it and enjoy your day!

It looks lovely and from what ypu say about the fit, it will be gorgeous on you and perfect for the occasion. Wear it with pride, you've done so well.

Former academic here who had attended c. 15 graduations and worn gowns every time, so I like to consider myself an expert in this niche area of fashion!

The gowns always look best when the bit at the front which goes around your chest is attached to your clothing. If you wear a button down shirt and tie then this is easy as there’s a button loop. Next best alternative is a v-neck with thick material or a strong seam which you can pin the hood to in a v-shape rather than the hood strangling you.

your outfit looks absolutely perfect based on this. Perfect level of smart and comfortable. Have a wonderful day!

I just wanted to feed back for anyone else who finds this thread in a similar predicament. The smart jumpsuit was perfect! I'm really glad I didn't go with my normal going to work clothes, which was the original plan, as I would have been very under-dressed. There was a significant range of outfits, including some silky dresses with itty bitty straps, which really were very much more evening party appropriate. Tips from me:

  1. You will be hanging around A LOT. I thought about fancy heels (which would have looked better) but went for comfy flats. This was a good call.
  2. Short skirts and bare legs look stupid under a gown. Short skirts and black tights? Better but not great. You want below knee or longer.
  3. Single colour outfits or white shirt/single colour bottom look better than bold patterns, which compete with the gown.
  4. Take safety pins! Being of a, uhhh, more maternal age, I took a whole box, then donated the ones I didn't need to the people gowning up.
  5. Something sturdy you can fix the gown to is sensible.
  6. Finally, it's effectively impossible to get out of a back-zipped jumpsuit once a gown is pinned in place. Pee before gowning up!

Thanks, everyone, for your advice and support (and particularly @PinkCrab for your specialised expertise!). I'm glad I went.

Fabulous feedback.
Although I’d disagree about patterns. DD’s added a welcome flash of colour under her grey gown, and picked up the hood colour.
