Is there any way to reduce spending getting ready for an event?

I am invited to a wedding that is coming up. So far I am spending some money getting ready for this. I bought some dresses but have to return one.

I had to get my hair done which I was probably going to do anyways.

The only bit of makeup up that I wear daily is a tinted moisturer but I think I will have to make more of an effort for the event. To make myself look better and look more presentable.

I bought a new tinted moisturer last weekend and it's awful on me.

Within the next few more days I decided that I will like have to buy a light foundation, concealer, blush, highlighter, mascara, eyeshadow, maybe a tinted lip balm perhaps because I don't usually wear lip stick. Would I need a setting spray.

Then I may not wear any of this again until the next event and goodness knows when that will be. The stuff could be out of date but then. Except for the perfume. I will wear that.

I also need a new perfume but I don't have a perfume.

All of this is all adding up. This is before I even buy a drink at the wedding.

Is there any way of reducing the spend on all of this.

If you aren’t going to use the makeup again I would recommend getting your makeup done at a department store on the day, they will then let you spend some of the cost on products and you can pick something you like and might use such as concealer or mascara.

I wasn't planning this and due to location and stuff I won't be able to manage this. It is a good idea though.

I might use the make up but it's unlikely that I will.

Go for a mid range make up, L’Oreal is good. Sometimes beauty counters will give you samples of foundation to take home and try, usually a few days worth so that is worth investigating. Also a blusher/highlighter palette will be cheaper than separate items.

Perfume - buy a sample of your favourite perfume, or invest in a sampler pack like this one: https://escentual.com/products/miller-harris-discovery-set-8-x-2ml?variant=49266626167108&om=7322&pv2=eyJhbGciOiJFUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJjIjoiR0JQIiwiZXhwIjoxNzU5ODU2Njk5LCJtIjoiMTI3MTQ0NSIsIm8iOiJtaWxsZXJoYXJyaXMyNzQiLCJwIjoyOC42OTk5OTk5OTk5OTk5OTl9.6rXC3ziVGQc3qM6XdyhiiVV1WFYv45Zy6nO6q-qO6GB3elUUtMYge0pNj8pGr500BW9N7B4DtB-j-T-W4U_2MA&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22638455495&gbraid=0AAAAADwPuZBKaKsShh2WbvuhHtSBJdAjw&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9JLHBhC-ARIsAK4PhcoDv9MlpbjuRAL_uJQoNFO3MdEklbQbiASl2kk7SBmiMVSqaMJYO1caAiEfEALw_wcB and you can pay in instalments if needed.

Visit a few make up counters to test out some products - you very often can get hold of sample sizes. Or decide what you like having tested them and then look online for reduced versions of the same products later - often people sell brand new minis online on eBay etc.

Have you not got a friend who can lend you some make-up or do your make-up for you? I always have tons of samples I’ve got free with things and could easily sort a friend out (I usually give mine away to a friend’s student daughter). Will you even be comfortable wearing make-up if you don’t usually wear it?

Same with perfume. Even a dress.

Abracadabra12 · 07/10/2025 17:20

Definitely don’t buy make up if you don’t ever wear it! The last couple of weddings I’ve been to there were some women not wearing make up because they never do and frankly would have looked a bit odd and unlike themselves if they had

mamagogo1 · 07/10/2025 17:25

Only buy what you’ll use in the future, no one cares if you wear make up or not. If you really want perfume, try Lidl, I have a knock if of Chanel from there.

KateDelRick · 07/10/2025 17:28

Don't wear any more makeup than you usually do. I only ever wear mascara, and that's it, whatever the occasion.
You don't need perfume either, but you could always use a perfumed body spray which is often cheaper?

The thing about make up - I don't want heavy coverage and I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable with heavy make up.

However I do appreciate the benefits of makeup and the flawless look it can help people with.

I only ever wear a tinted moisturer but lately that's looking bad on me.

I do feel like I need to have something. My face gets red easily and it wouldn't look good without it.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/10/2025 17:44

I dont understand this. I don’t wear make up aside from a light foundation and lipstick. I wouldn’t wear any more on a night out, so I wouldn’t start for a wedding (unless it was my own wedding). Likewise with perfume.

Bottleplant · 07/10/2025 17:47

I wouldn't buy any make up or perfume I don't wear normally. If it's not something you ever use, you don't need it for a wedding Imo.

I hate it when you see wedding guests who somehow look like they're in fancy dress, dressed as wedding guests - almost a caricature of what a wedding guest should look like. For me, it should be more effort than the school run etc, but still basically you and your usual style.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 07/10/2025 17:52

WTF???
No of course you don't have to buy all that.
I could vaguely understand make up, but perfume?
Would the couples day be ruined if you didn't wear it?
FWIW, occasionally I wear a little bit of make up, usually not and no one has ever cared.

Springflowersyay · 07/10/2025 17:54

I don’t wear makeup at all and therefore don’t buy any. I used to, but stopped completely in the last 6 or 7 years.
There are quite a few events a year I go to, where I am the only woman not wearing makeup. But that’s ok. I have as much fun as everyone else (maybe more as I’m not fussing about smudged mascara or lipstick on teeth). No one has ever asked me why I’m not wearing any.
My face is perfectly acceptable without it and I wouldn’t buy it for a one-off, only for it to go /off’/clumpy/separated before the next event.

So that’s one expense saved immediately.

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 07/10/2025 17:56

Can you buy a tinted moisturiser from a low cost range, add a bit of translucent powder, similarly buy a lipstick from the same range and double it's use as a blusher? Cheap and cheerful Mascara and you could be ready to go for less than £25.

Namechangeforthis88 · 07/10/2025 17:59

Think most of my make up must be over 15 years old. Charity shops good for dress3s for weddings, it is the kind of thing that is only worn once or twice before being donated.

Roseinatub · 07/10/2025 18:01

This is just me thinking - I know Primark has some make up. I would imagine they would have budget prices. Instead of going to boots for somewhere similar for makeup could I try getting some concealer and highlighter and blush there perhaps. Would bronsing drops work instead of blush?

How about rosalique? That's advertised as an anti redness cream but I think it could be blended to provide some coverage. Would I have luck with that?

I do wear dresses. I do wear perfume when I have it.

But you said you want to reduce spending? Lots of people are making suggestions but you don’t seem interested in considering any of them. What exactly is it you want to hear?

JurassicPark4Eva · 07/10/2025 18:38

Don't pay to have your hair done or to replace your entire make up bag.

Buy basic £1 make up, don't bother with a full face if you don't usually wear it.

Get a tester of perfume from a shop.

No idea why you'd spend all that unnecessarily unless you're the mother of the bride or similar and worried about the photos.

Edited

I suppose my post was indirectly considering budget or pound shop stuff.

It's not that I am not interested. I know the first reply suggesting getting my make up done, I do like that but it's not practical for me due to location.

I won't be getting my hair done professionally on the day but I did recently get the highlites topped up. I had to do this anyways for myself. Thank you for the rest of the advice. I think I might just hit Primark maybe and what I can find there maybe on a budget. I know rituals has some nice scents for low-ish cost so mayne I can try there instead of the bottle that I usually like.

If you don't wear make up normally then I would stick with the following:

  • concealer
  • powder
  • blush
  • eyeshadow
  • mascara
  • lip tint
  • setting sprat

Primary make up is suppose to be OK but if you can I would try and use max factor for the powder. I wouldn't buy foundation as your tinted moisturiser, concealer and powder should be enough. A setting spray should help cheaper mascara not run.

I wouldn't get highlighter as this can look terrible unless your use to wearing it.
