Dress for mum drinks

Dd has just moved schools (y1) and I've been invited for drinks with the school mums. Im not very stylish and I need some help on what to wear. Not sure what theyll be wearing but by day they are very much a sweaty Betty leggings crowd. Sw London.

I want something simple that can be dressed up with jewellery but that I could wear again on a nice day out (not really dressy evening wear). A dress - maybe knee length with tights and black boots? Is that terribly out of fashion? I dont mind longer but I struggle with cold legs then as cant wear legginga/tights. What do you suggest? Im size 12, 6ft tall. Budget up to £100, good quality brand.

Don’t want to burst your bubble but good quality brand dresses don’t cost £100 new out of the shop, even in the sales. And you’d want a brand that’s generous with fabric, in order for it to be long enough.

Karen Millen is often recommended to tall women - but I’m really struggling to see anything suitable there. The best I can find is this

Black dress

if you wouldn’t mind mini length. Could certainly be dressed down with opaque tights and knee high boots. And it’s 50% cotton. But it might be too ‘smart’ - my only idea of London mother dressing is from Motherland …

Me and em sale maybe?

Are you sure you have nothing to wear in your closet for some casual drinks though?

What type of place are you going to and what day/ time etc.

I find drinks at a pub tend to be very casual these days.

I would suggest dark blue or black barrel or wide legged jeans, with ankle boots or nice flats with a lightweight jumper or cardigan. Dress up with jewellery, belt and maybe a red lip.

Or a satin bias cut skirt with pumps or nice trainers, and a jumper or boxy cardi layered over a camisole. Again, with some jewellery.

Daytime drinks or evening drinks? At a bar or a pub or someone's house? Midweek or a Fri/ Sat night?

If it's at a bar/ pub can you pop in for a quick drink and check out the feel of the place?

If you have a brand you like and know the sizing fairly well what about looking on Vinted?

Thanks its friday night drinks. In a pub. Yes i can look on vinted but im not exactly sure what im looking for.

What sort of things do you usually wear? Parent pub drinks here (also London) mean barrel or wide leg jeans and a jumper. I usually wear what I’ve had on during the day, opaque tights, mini skirt, jumper, chunky lace up boots.

If you want something more quality for your budget look for decent wool/cashmere jumpers on Vinted and wear with an existing skirt or trousers.

Not a Londoner but every time I’m there I’m always surprised by how casually Londoners dress for everything in comparison to where I live (Midlands) and where I’m from (Manchester). That being said for the event you are talking about I wouldn’t go for a dress, I never really grew out of ‘jeans and a nice top’ so my go to would be dark wide leg jeans, a metallic or velvet flat shoe, shirt/top that is a smarter than a t-shirt (lace, satin, interesting shape or detail) and a wool coat or leather jacket, weather depending.
I think I’d be overdressed with my London colleagues though!

I would wear some nice wide leg trousers or jeans, a nice top and then a cozy jacket. Pair some nice platform trainers
