What's going on with my hair??

ARRRGH - my hair is driving me crazy and I'm not sure what's happened or what's going wrong.

I have been dying my hair with Nice & Easy for a couple of years now and I also straighten my hair. For about a year I've not had any problems, hair has been fine, but for the past 6-8 months the hair at my parting and crown is very glupy, like I've always got product in my hair that's not washed out properly (and I don't use any styling products). I've used the same shampoo and conditioner for years (Pantene Normal).

I have stood under the shower and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and it still comes out glupy.

I'm wondering if it's the tube of conditioner that came in the Nice&Easy box that I use once a week? Could it be over-conditioning my hair?

My hairdresser said she thinks my hair is more porous cos of the dying and straightening but for ages it was fine. I can only think that N&E have changed their conditioner recipe?

For the last week I have only shampoo'd and put Pantene conditioner only on the ends of my hair (avoiding top roots) and it does seem to be getting better, but it's hard to brush and run my fingers through my hair due to the lack of conditioner I think.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated cos it's really driving me crazy. Thankfully it just makes my hair 'feel' horrible and doesn't make it look really greasy.

I have heard that you should regularily change your shampoo and conditioner. NOt sure if any truth in it. I am sure some hairdressers out there will give you better advice.

Hairdressers always recommend not using Pantene. They say it coats the hair in something which is why it feels soft and shiny. Not sure how much of this is true. Maybe try switching products for a while. You can get products that are supposed to clean away residue, such as Nutrogena. Again, not sure if this is true, but could be worth a try

this is going to sound obvious, but are you shampooing it properly? I went through stage last year for forgetting to shampoo behind my right ear (i have no idea why) and the hair would end up matted and felt horrible.

Hi, Thanks for the replies.

I have used pantene for YEARS and have never had a problem with it. I have tried others in the past but never found them as good. About a year ago I tried Tresemme which seemed to really dry my hair so I went back to pantene.

I have visited family around the UK only a few times this year and do notice I have to rinse more with their water. We had a holiday abroad for 3 weeks in April, but the problem existed before then.

It's funny I had heard the 'coating' story with Head and Shoulders! or any '2 in 1' type shampoo/conditioner. I also though that I wasn't rinsing properly as the showerhead makes the water come out in a ring and I thought the 'gap' in the middle was aimed at my crown iykwim so I've made a real effort to make sure it's all wet and rinsed since this problem.

It's really driving me crazy. I'm due to dye my hair this week (the grey! ) so maybe I'll use my own conditioner afterwards and avoid theirs just to rule it out. Then if I still have the problem I'll swap shampoos completely, eg. will try that Nutrogena. Thx again.

I have been using Pantene layers recently and have noticed a dramatic improvement in my hair condition was previously using Herbal Essences (the blue one).

Not shouting yes, yes yes in the shower tho!

On another thread people were singing the praises of the Aussie range and certainly I have had good results with that range in the past.

Also love Aveda if you have a bit of spare cash!

99 - as interesting as that link was - I think if you did some more research you would find that everyones hair is different, and as such responds differently to different shampoos.

It is a good idea to change your shampoo regularly, as different shampoos contain different ingredients, and so there may be some proteins left on your hair that are not being removed as effectively by one brand as another.

I would suggest maybe try and use less shampoo each time you wash, and really make sure you have rinsed thoroughly. Try washing your hair upside down, it is easier to rinse the scalp properly this way.

I think you should shave your head

Its very liberating

99redballoons · 05/06/2008 13:52

Shaving it just might be the answer!

Thanks again for the advice. I dyed my hair this morning and it feels 'normal' again, for now. Will avoid the deep clensing conditioner that came with it and see if I still get the same results with the Pantene. If the problem comes back then I'll change shampoos for a bit.

Many thanks.
