If you have very dense hair, what hairstyle do you have?

Looking for inspiration. My hair is extremely dense (loads of it!), and has a bit of a kink/wave. It's in quite good condition, very dark with a few greys in. I currently have a short bob with an undercut, which has been great for taking out some of the weight. I'm getting a bit bored, though, as limited ways to style it. I like to wear it wavy, but find with the current length the waves don't sit right. So I'm thinking of growing it all out again (including the undercut) and having something a bit more versatile where I can also wear it wavy.

Sounds a lot like mine. I have it bra strap length with long layers and barely do anything with it just wash it every 4 or so days and wear it down, in a pony tail, half up or a soft bun with hair sticks.

@AnneLovesGilbert do you not find it incredibly heavy with it that long? I guess maybe the layers reduce the weight?? The longest I've had it is past my shoulders then I find it so overwhelming and get it chopped off!

Following for ideas as mine is extremely thick and long and I'm booking myself in soon to go shorter. The weight is driving me mad. I can't go too short or I'll be a pyramid.

@Imperfectpolly if you do want to go short I do recommend an undercut. It was amazing getting rid of so much weight and great for the summer.

Have naturally very thick curly/frizzy hair which has grown back even thicker after chemotherapy.

Pre-cancer, I straightened it and wore it mostly down, in a long bob. However, during the pandemic, started to wear it scrapped up into a bun. I did have an undercut at one point but hated it. Once I found a good hairdresser who knew how to cut and dry my hair, it made a real difference. I also used to have regular keratin treatments which were great for defrizzing and reducing the mass. Fast forward to now and I can't be arsed with all that. My hair is kept in its natural straight, either worn in two french braids or two corn row, otherwise pulled into a top knot. So much easier.

Mine is very thick, very dark (with a few greys), and wavy. I've had it in a graduated bob for most of my life, it's much too heavy when it's long, and doesn't suit me at all. Right now it's an asymmetric pixie cut, and though my ears are cold in winter I'm very much enjoying it!

I have similar hair and have always worn it in long layers and asked hair dresser to put invisible layers through to reduce the bulk. It was like a thatch when I made the mistake of having a bob. Had a new do last week and have gone just below shoulder length with lots of wispy layers to try and get rid of the underfuzz which has appeared over the ladt few years. So far feels much lighter and manageable.

I gave up fighting mine and recently had it cut pixie short. It still needed an undercut at that. It feels so much better not having to wrangle the hairdryer and straighteners. Whenever it was long it was in a pony anyway so it doesn’t really look any different from the front.

I have a mullet with a lot of the weight taken out, I love it. The length really suits my natural wave and I can just wash it, use a bit of product and leave it. I used to have a bob and ended up scraping it up into a little ponytail all the time because I couldn’t be bothered straightening it every day.

I can also leave it a good 5 days between washes now, whereas I used to have to wash it every other day when it was longer.

Mine was down my back and the weight controlled the waves. Had it cut last week to just past my shoulder and layers added. However I miss my long hair now. Aww well it will grow again 🤷‍♀️

Yeah I've learnt my lesson after getting it cut into a bob before. I can't be bothered to style it lol

Graduated bob just below my jawline with the ends thinned. Any longer and my neck gets hot.

BlueWalker · 05/10/2025 10:34

Long (halfway between my bra strap and tailbone), thick, straight but with a tiny wave that tends to the frizzy. A few long layers but I've tried all sorts of bobs, layered cuts, shoulder length etc. and they were all just a pain to style and look halfway decent. Long is more manageable day to day. High pony, bun, two plaits (Dutch ones if I can be arsed so I get loose waves on day 2) I then pin like a crown, half up/half down, that kind of thing. It's white at the front and back to the crown, black underneath, so a half up/half down is quite dramatic. Best thing I did was have a thick blunt fringe cut in. Frames my face, means on a hair up day I only have a fringe to wash and blow dry since that's the bit that looks greasy, and took some of the weight out.

Same! Only downside is I can’t leave it months between cuts but my hairdresser does a dry cut for £21 so not too bad - I go twice as often now but it’s less than half the price.

That's how mine was for a long time - the thinning scissors are my favourite hairdresser's gadget 😂
