Been using Paul Mitchell but have to say I'm not overly impressed for the price!

Any alternatives out there?

Maybe too simplistic but I would try a cheap as chips conditioner and just use loads of it 😬 Certainly wouldn't be using high end conditioner for a 9 year old!

Changing how we managed her hair - the conditioner brand didn't make much of a difference.

The brush - Tangle Tamer style ones were a game changer.

Not brushing her hair when it was wet. De tangle before washing and then wait for it to dry before brushing again.

Trimming her hair little & often.

Reduce the use of hair dryers.

And when it got really bad in the teen years using Living Proof hair serum - super expensive but one small bottle lasted over a year. Reduced the breakages created from dying, heated tongs, hair dryers et al.

Is this a spray in after wash & condition you need ?
if so the Aussie leave in spray is great, good at detangling too.
they do two variants, one is for dry hair. This one is probably best for a child’s hair

Another recommendation for a Tangle Tamer brush and a few conditioners that DD has tried are the L’Oréal Hydra Pure, Aussie Miracle Moist and the L’Oréal dream lengths leave in no hair cut cream.
DD has very long thick hair and these work brilliantly.

Avon do some nice ones for children you can order online.

I just use Alberto balsam for my DD, she has long wavy hair that is very prone to tangles. It is super cheap and silicone free, put loads on and comb through the hair with a wide toothed comb, leave a bit then rinse. Minimal brushing when dry

Asda own brand, smells of apples, leave in conditioner

How long is her hair? If long, it’s amazing how less tangled it gets with a couple of inches cut off.
I’d use any paraben free conditioner that’s on offer. Mid length and ends only. Leave in smoothing serum/cream (used very sparingly) will work better than a leave in conditioner.
Use a shower brush - so much better than the tangle teasers. Keeping it plaited saves a lot of tangles, too.

Another vote for frequent cuts! My daughter has long and very thick hair and she wants to keep it long but a good trim every 6-8 weeks makes a huge difference to the tangles.
I’ve never found much difference in conditioners but loads of it.

AhBiscuits · 04/10/2025 14:15

Definitely agree with inexpensive conditioner but loads. My 9 year old has very long tangle prone hair. Current favourite is Loreal Elvive.

revlon 2 phase equave. recommend by hairdresser comb with a wide tooth comb starting at the bottom and work your way up
always get the revlon on offer especially coming up to xmas

Ireolu · 04/10/2025 19:55

Dr organic tea tree conditioner - fool myself it will also deter lice!
I use avalon leave in conditioner as a detangler
FHI unbrush - better than tangle teaser brush IMO. Can now comb without tears.

I’d recommend the Beauty Works 10 in 1 spray. I used to use color WOW money mist, but I won’t bother spending the money any more. The beauty works makes brushing very easy.

musicalfrog · 04/10/2025 20:47

Wow thanks everyone what a great response, lots of things to investigate. Much appreciated!

Tangle spray
https://amzn.eu/d/b74a30d

and this paddle brush
https://amzn.eu/d/2F0XC40

both game changers for my DC who swims a lot and hates having her hair washed or brushed.
