If you’re only wanting to get rid of the red, try a colour remover, might have to do 2 sessions depending on the shade. Alternatively your only option is to dye over it.

I went from Ariel The Little Mermaid red to platinum blonde using box dyes, box bleach and toners. I believe it was pure dumb luck that I didn’t give myself chemical burns or go bald.

Head and shoulders if you want to strip the colour? Or vosene?

What did you use?

I find red washes out far too easily!

Use head and shoulders and hot water. It will fade a lot but to get rid of it entirely you'll have to wait til it grows out or put something closer to your natural colour over the top.

O was red for years and started dying it brown every 3 months or so and eventually the red buggered off to red hair land

Yeah sorry, forgot to add that I used a colour remover first, I believe it was called ColourB4 or something similar but there’s loads of different brands which do exactly the same, then went in with a honey blonde box dye to get a solid base, then used bleach lightening kits and finally a toner.
My hair was surprisingly healthy the entire process, god knows how! It took roughly a week in between applications and my hair was some various shades of copper/yellow in between treatments.

I'll post an image of the products (or similar) I used. I did 2 sessions of the bleaching/lightening kits if I remember correctly. I can’t remember the toner, it was just a basic cheap one and the blonde box dye I used was about £4 from Wilko.

I have used the following recipe I found online a few times to remove hair colour I didn't like, once when I'd dyed my hair green in lockdown, and another couple of times when I'd used the wrong shade of red or got sick of it. Works really well IME:

  1. In a bowl put enough Head & Shoulders to cover the whole hair like a conditioning hair mask would.
  2. Add a 50p piece squirt of washing up liquid
  3. Add a heaped tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda
  4. Gently mix together into a thick hair mask, then put all over the hair, scrubbing a little to bubble it slightly.
  5. Leave on for fifteen minutes
  6. Wash out in the shower using Head and Shoulders shampoo.
  7. Condition really well as it can be quite drying.
