Any clothes retailers measure their clothes in inches/cm?

For women, obviously!

I'm sick of returning so much online. I can be anything from size 6 to size 14/XL. My husband confidently orders 30" trousers and they always fit, because the waistband is exactly 30".

Levi's do it for women I know. But is there anywhere else? High street prices 😊

They all do if you loom at the details. They often put on the dimensions.

Some ebay sellers do this

JaneJeffer · 30/09/2025 12:28

So many places don’t put leg length and it’s really annoying.

BusterGonad · 30/09/2025 12:33

A bit of a quirky one, but Joanie clothing always show the exact measurements per garment in the details section.

BarnacleBeasley · 30/09/2025 12:33

The thing is, unless you're only buying high-waisted trousers that fit on your actual waist, it would be hard to reliably size women's clothes that way, because what they're actually saying is 'if your waist is 30" then we reckon you'll be about this wide three inches down from your waist'. I always have to size down in women's waist sizes because I have narrow hips. Men will have a bit less variation in waist-hip ratios.

Uniqlo give measurements for individual items of clothing, and will compare them to other stuff you've bought from them in the past if you have an account.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the point that fitting on the waist is only one piece of the puzzle, and garments have to fit elsewhere too, but it might narrow it down to two sizes to try rather than four!

I know all retailers supply a size guide with inches, but it often does not match the reality of the size of the clothes. A fitted dress which is sold in size "27 inch waist" is more likely to actually have a 27" waist than a "size 10".

I'll check out Joanie as suggested ☺️

I also find most high street stores use a generic size guide for the whole store and it's not product specific. If you ever use Temu or Shein they always put the exact measurements of that specific item on the size guide.

TroubledBloodyMary · 01/10/2025 08:43

I can scarcely think of a brand or site I buy from that doesn’t give detailed measurements for each size of a garment. (I spend ages looking at these things, with a tape measure to hand.)

Look at every brand you come across and reject any that don’t offer the service you want.

Leg lengths online on trousers are so important. Mint Velvet do put the leg length but when I measured at home they were an inch shorter than stated.

Really? As in, they state that eg this grey cable knit jumper measures 20" flat from armpit to armpit, 25" from neck to hem, etc?
This is very rare in my experience! I'd love to know where you shop!

@Reginalda Uniqlo does this. I've just looked up a jumper and it gives body length, shoulder width, body width, sleeve length and collar point (it's a turtleneck) for the size you're considering, one size up, and one size down in a little comparison table.

TroubledBloodyMary · 01/10/2025 13:58

The difficulty is they’re mostly not High St shops, @Reginalda.

However, if you look at something like this:

MHL trousers

where measurements are given in the Size Guide, if you wait until the sales these trousers will be reduced to pretty much High St prices.

Community Clothing

doesn’t have a High St presence but as you can see they offer two different ways of assessing the correct size for every garment.

Or look at this fit guide for

Studio Nicholson

Again, pay attention to the sales (hold your nerve until the last few days) and you’ll pay very little more than for High St brands.

Same here:

Toast Trousers

and they are High St. As are:

Cos

Seriously, I can’t imagine where you’re shopping.😅

BarnacleBeasley · 01/10/2025 15:22

@TroubledBloodyMary I am not finding this information on the COS website - perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place, but they tend to give one measurement for the garment, e.g. inside leg of trousers in one specific size, or back length of jumper, and they give a detailed size guide for your body, but not the items of clothing.
