Hello wise mumsnetters!
im terrible at make up and want to get my make up done for our work Christmas party this year. Our local selfridges have all the counters and you can book online but which brand do I go with? I don’t want something super OTT I want a smoky eye type vibe and nice skin. Which brand would be best? Thank you!

I would say Mac or Estée Lauder

SomeLikeitSnot · 29/09/2025 19:30

Thanks @TheMAFSfan ive done MAC a long time ago but it was quite heavy and I feel a bit old for that now (I’m only 35!). I was thinking maybe bobbi brown as I like some of their products, didn’t think of Estée Lauder I’ll have a look!

Hourglass although if you have to buy products they are very expensive. Lisa Eldridge would be good if they have her makeup there or Charlotte Tilbury.

confessionsofatrolleydolley · 29/09/2025 21:44

Charlotte Tillbury embrace the natural elegance/glowing skin vibe you might like. More natural than heavy.

AndeanFlamingo · 30/09/2025 15:16

I think Bobbi Brown would be good for that, especially if you like their products.

UpMyself · 30/09/2025 15:38

Bobbi Brown is part of the Estee Lauder group.

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/09/2025 15:41

Another vote for Charlotte Tilbury. Great make up for parties, and lovely products - not heavy (her Sheer Glow Tint foundation stick is awesome), and loads of choices of eye shadows and lippie.

Comefromaway · 30/09/2025 15:50

Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder or Christian Dior.

I did Trinny London and really like the fresh / Mon makeup look. The girl was very knowledgeable and good with colours - she went for a smudgy rose gold eyeshadow/cream - which really made my eyes pop and looked very contemporary.

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 16:13

Charlotte tilbury for sure.

Is there a Sephora store near you? They offer a make up service, which you pay for, but then no expectation to buy the products. Because of this they really do listen to what you want as you are paying for a make up artist, not getting a sales pitch via a demo of certain products!

Yes but they're still separate counters and separate products.

UpMyself · 30/09/2025 17:57

@AndeanFlamingo Sure, but BB herself isn't involved now.

I don't understand how this is relevant? It's still a different brand with different products, the name is irrelevant.

UpMyself · 30/09/2025 18:19

@AndeanFlamingo , it is relevant.

@AndeanFlamingo , it is relevant.

How? I genuinely want to know because I cannot see it.

Shakemesexy · 30/09/2025 18:22

I’m 49 and MAC do my favourite looks. I don’t think make up has an age limit…..

Tryingatleast · 30/09/2025 18:23

What is your skin type op? I found mac heavy too and Bobbi brown made my skin literally itch and my eyes water so if you’re anyway sensitive I’d say clarins or Clinique, ( got Estée Lauder done years ago and was wow though!)
