What actually helped you grow your hair out?

My lovely stylist of 10+ years moved away this summer. I went back to the same salon, and for the first time in my adult life, I actually felt like crying when she was done. It’s not her fault - I’d been growing my hair out for my wedding, and had built up a lot of dull, dry ends that I needed to lose. But the shorter cut also meant I had to lose my layers, and I hate how flat it looks now. I’ve already been to another stylist for a sense check, who confirmed that the best thing to do is wait for it to grow out and then start putting layers back in.

So! What are your tried and tested methods for getting hair to grow back out quickly? I’m overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information online, and a lot of it seems to be conflicting…

I went from pixie to shoulder length and thought I could keep it vaguely stylish through the grow-out. But it made it really hard to transition from short to not-short because it meant undercuts etc. Eventually I had to bite the bullet and go through 3-5 months of it looking pretty meh. So I agree with stylist 2.

I also cried when my really good hairdresser moved to Australia (about 10 years ago) 😁. But my new one is just fab ❤️

@PlanetSaturn glad you got through it 😅 3-5 months is better than I was expecting in fairness!

When is your wedding OP?

Hair typically goes half an inch a month so if your wedding is in 12 months you should be able to gain another 6" give or take., if you take care of your hair now.

Yeah there's a lot of advice and suggestions online but really they mostly advise the same things.

If you've read them you know what they are.
Get enough high quality protein, oily fish, milk, eggs etc.
Supplements if your diet is lacking.
Careful treatment of hair, heat protectant, non- drying shampoo with less chemicals, more conditioner.

There is no magic way to make hair grow quicker only by following the more common sense advice.

In the meantime consult with your hair stylist to realistically work towards having that special hairstyle for your wedding.

@Quickqueensquirrel thank you! I've already had my wedding, but since I was growing my hair out for it, I hadn't been taking enough off the ends for a while - and had to bite the bullet yesterday.

I feel like I've seen and read a lot of conflicting stuff about things like rosemary oil, collagen/biotin supplements, nizoral, etc. although I suppose those are about getting thickness back as well as growth... but I think you're right that the common sense way is the best way!
