Hair drying naturally

Why can’t I let my hair dry naturally without it looking insanely greasy the next day??
If I blow dry it it is absolutely fine and doesn’t get greasy (or look it) for 3-4 days, yet everytime I try to let it dry naturally, it just looks awful.

What am I doing wrong or is it just my hair type? Just past shoulder length hair- straight but with a wave to it (annoyingly in between straight and wavy), fine hairs but lots of them, highlighted blonde all over (naturally brown).

It doesn’t matter if I let it dry down or tied up/plaited, it just looks lank, limp and greasy.

I'm interested in this too. My hair sounds similar but maybe a little more wavy. If I don't blow dry it's greasy and lank but also frizzy and fly away. I've given up and just blow dry each time.

Chocolateteabag · 29/09/2025 20:59

@purplecomet - I have the same - if I let it dry naturally, my hair looks frizzy and greasy at the same time. My hairdresser says I should try not to use heat all the time - but my hair then looks dreadful straight away and just gets greasier - whereas I can get 3-4 days from a decent blow dry and light straighten

ThePoshUns · 29/09/2025 21:03

I’d like to know as well!

Pricelessadvice · 02/10/2025 06:57

It seems I’m not the only one then!

I had a friend who would turn up to work with her hair wet from the shower and by mid morning it would be dry as if she had blow dried it.
I used to express my admiration for her hair and she’d look at me like I was mad. She assumed everyone’s hair was like that.

It would make life so much easier if I could do that!

Mine is the same but I’ve discovered if I blast the roots dry with the hairdryer and let the ends dry naturally it doesn’t go greasy and I’m still avoiding heat on the ends.

SliceofTosst · 02/10/2025 07:16

@tallache1 I do the same. Just gives a few more hours before getting greasy.

Hurumphh · 02/10/2025 07:24

Mine is exactly the same description and it’s the same with air drying. I’ve come to terms with it needing a good wash, blow dry and straighten to look and feel good every day, and I give it a rest on weekends or if I’m not going out anywhere.

As I’ve got older (I’m 40 and hormonal changes beginning) I’ve been able to leave it another day before a wash, it doesn’t get as greasy and looks fine for going to work. (The shedding though…!)

PeonyPatch · 02/10/2025 07:25

I’m the same…

TheDandyLion · 02/10/2025 09:41

Mine does the same so I've conceded to blow-drying every time I wash my hair. But I will let it air dry mostly, then just 30 seconds to a minute at the roots with a hair dryer.

henlake7 · 02/10/2025 09:45

I think we are just 'blessed' with whatever hair type we have and then we just have to live with it!
Mine looks really nice for about 5 minutes after I blowdry it then the second it encounters a breeze it floofs up and develops weird kinks and becomes 90% staticky fly aways.🙄

NameChange1212 · 02/10/2025 09:57

Same. Fine in the summer if I go into the sun, but other than that I have to dry it. I have a leave in treatment that doesn’t need to be activated with heat. Davines, All in One Milk, is the translation. Not sure if it is available in the UK. It made a noticeable difference even if I don’t dry my hair fully.

QueenMummyTheFirst · 02/10/2025 10:02

Mine used to be like this, until I started trying curly girl methods (it's not curly, but frizzy/ wavy). I think what has helped is to lift the roots from my scalp before it dries, so that it doesn't dry flat to my head. I use an air dry creme when i get out of the shower, which helps it look sleek without being greasy.

Also, now that I don't use heat to dry it at all, maybe it's just got used to it? I can go 3 days without washing now, which would have been impossible a year ago if I let it air dry.

BadActingParsley · 02/10/2025 10:03

Mine was fine just left to dry naturally, thick hair with a very slight wave - until I hit 40. Now I look like Tim Minchin (without the beard)

I think something that helps is using a proper clarifying shampoo every so often. But unfortunately nothing substitutes for a proper blow dry!!

What cream do you use?

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 02/10/2025 11:22

I have similar hair to you OP, and if I let it airdry then the same day as I wash it (i.e. before it gets a chance to get greasy) I spray the roots with dry shampoo and it lasts a few days and looks less lacklustre.

Tammy295 · 02/10/2025 11:28

Too much conditioner?

MsCactus · 02/10/2025 11:50

I have very fine, straight hair. I wash it every morning and let it air dry

My hair would look lank/greasy if I put too much conditioner on it and didn't blow dry it dry.

Could you try using a clarifying shampoo to strip all the products out, then a normal shampoo and either no/or barely any conditioner to see if it still goes lank/greasy when you let it dry naturally

ThePoshUns · 02/10/2025 11:17

What cream do you use?

This is the one I'm currently using:
https://www.boots.com/vo5-frizz-free-hair-cream-for-dry-dull-hair-100ml-10229206?traffic=paid.shopping&gclsrc=aw.ds&gadsource=1&gadcampaignid=19971248798&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0oid9quFkAMV-JpQBh2wwhEEAQYASABEgKzvDBwE

Once washed, I flip my head upside down, use a small amount rubbed between my hands, and run it down the ends of my hair (not too close to my roots) then scrunch upwards (don't wash out).

Sometimes I use this strengthening treatment instead, using the same technique - it depends how I'm feeling on the day!

How long between washes? Going longer helps. I go 1 week and do hair oil in between.

Conditioner on the ends, shampoo on the scalp.

After towel drying I flip my hair over and brush in leave in conditioner on the ends then flip back. It then dries like a salon blowout and very shiny.

Pricelessadvice · 02/10/2025 20:01

I definitely don’t use too much conditioner as I’m careful to only put a small amount on the ends. I try to leave it 3-4 days between washes (3 when it’s getting nearer to needing the hairdresser again as roots seem to make it look and feel greasier) I couldn’t leave it any longer as I ride so wear my hat daily and that doesn’t do much for your hair unfortunately.
