Help with daytime capsule wardrobe.

I need some inspiration. I'm semi retired and work a couple of days a week. The weekends we are usually out and I'm fine with going out outfits. During the week I'm usually pottering in the house, popping to the shops or babysitting. I'd love some stylish casual outfits. I was out looking yesterday for some nice joggers but they are all too long on me. I'm 60 size 14 5'2 and carry all my weight around my middle. Any suggestions appreciated.

Some cords? Joggers are ok for around the house and I have some thick thermals one for very cold dogs walks but they look a bit shit.

Next do a capsule wardrobe. Tu at Sainsburys is good for basics too.

I like Tu but just end up buying random things. I generally end up in M & S straight leg joggers and a t shirt. I used to wear a lot of skinny jeans but they are dated now. I do have wide leg jeans for going out but there is a bit too much material in them for knocking about the house iykwim.

You could try hiking trousers. They are really comfortable and sufficiently smart to pop to the shops (unless you live somewhere very smart). I am also short and have been more able to get the right leg length in them. You can also get thermal versions which is the main reason I ever got a pair.

Any recommendations in brands

M&S do a variety of jersey straight and wide leg trousers that straddle joggers and trousers well. Very comfortable!

I wfh a few days a week, and these are my “home” trousers. Smart enough to pop to the local market town at lunch, but comfortable enough for long days at my desk.

Could I ask what the waist:hip ratio is on these trousers? Ie are they more suited to an ‘apple’ or ‘pear’? I am looking for trousers whee the waist is proportionally larger than the hips.

I prefer mountain warehouse, but decathlon do them too. M&S do them though they are more outdoorsy versions, which wouldn't be an issue for me.

Surely just go to Uniqlo and buy everything that appeals to you? The

Uniqlo U collection

is just out and most of the things should slot into an existing casual wardrobe. The :C collection is slightly smarter. I’m 5’3 and don’t find any of their clothes too long, but they could always be shortened by your local alterations service if so.

Ha, just noticed this thread agrees!

Edited

Not sure if it is all branches but uniqlo do a shortening service (my daughter used it recently for some interview trousers).

For the sake of honesty I should say I’ve just had a wander around my local Uniqlo, and whilst everything looked good (though very thin fabrics) there was too much Made in China for me to want to buy. But I know when I go online there are things with a slightly different provenance.)

@Imtoooldforallthis I don’t think you gave a budget? For similarly casual clothes you could look at

Community Clothing
Navy Grey
Studio Nicholson

depending on how much you want to pay.

@Imtoooldforallthis i'm 61 and 5 ft 3 & totally resigned to having many of my trousers tailored. Do you follow any Instagram accounts? Melissa Murrell posts loads of casual outfits & joggers on all different ages & at different price points & she's 5 ft 3.

I agree with Uniqlo. My most recent pair of jeans comes from there & the elasticated waist trousers can fit very well. The satin trousers I bought a while ago are so beautifully comfortable & look very pretty.

CurbsideProphet · 01/10/2025 18:12

I'm 5ft and recently bought a pair of navy cords from the Petite section of M&Co after searching so many websites. I'm really pleased with them.
My online inspiration often comes from The Petite Lady on Instagram.

The White Company is brilliant for casual and leisure wear if you have the budget

TroubledBloodyMary · 02/10/2025 16:57

Realising I missed Cos out of my list yesterday. It may be obvious, but amidst all the corporate wear they have lots of casual stuff.

Peclet · 02/10/2025 17:06

Uniqlo do some nice jersey style
basics that drape well.

they have some barrel leg jersey trousers, I’d wear them with a boxy long sleeve stripe top, and then a nice knit over the top. Burgundy is the colour this season.

Them and some flat chelsea boots and either a mid length puffa or a barn jacket would be nice.

you can mix match tops- so a white t with a denim shirt worn over the top and then a fleecy gilet over the top- mint velvet is good.

When I’m at home (like today I’m wfh) I pretty much live in plisse wide leg trousers either genuine Issey Miyake Pleats Please ones or (much much cheaper) Asos knock-offs. They’re super-comfy and practical, machine washable and don’t need ironing and can be dressed up or down. I’ve been to fancy night outs in them and I’ve also vegetated on the sofa all weekend in them, they cover both ends of the spectrum and pretty much everything in between.

So today I’m wearing black plisse trousers with a pink silk/linen crinkled top (which has a huge ‘feature’ polo neck) from Grizas. It’s literally like wearing pyjamas but I look quite smart apparently (several people have commented on my Teams calls today). I had to pop out briefly so just threw some comfy black loafers on and a denim chore coat and was stopped in the street by a stranger who said how chic my outfit was. I was seriously HUH????🤔With the exception of my knickers, my entire outfit today is preloved from Vinted.
