Alternative to dry cleaning?

I forgot to stick the disposable sweat-pads in a dry clean only jacket, before wearing it over a sleeveless dress. Now the pits smell of sweat. The rest of the jacket is fine, but I can’t put it back in the wardrobe with sweaty pits. Is there any alternative to dry cleaning the whole garment?

Is it an expensive jacket? If it was mine I would just be putting it in the machine on a gentle wash. I have never had a problem doing this.

I have a refresh function on my Haier washer/dryer, which is probably of no use to you at all, but you might know someone who has a similar function on theirs? Its a bit like dry cleaning clothes, it refreshes them without getting them wet.

Expensive or otherwise (it was an amazing sale find) it is irreplaceable. I haven’t found anything like it since. It’s absolutely perfect, goes with almost everything and elevates everything. I don’t want to take any risks with it.

I’m a big fan of putting dry clean only things on a delicates wash with wool wash detergent. In your case though, you probably need a stronger detergent or product to kill the bacteria.

Is there a spot cleaner that would work? I remember my mum had something way back in the mists of time, but it was banned - carcinogenic, or ozone-destroying, probably both.

What colour is the garment? A sprinkle of bicarb and let it sit for a while may help before carefully removing or a spray of diluted essential oil followed by a good steam may get rid of the smell. Other than that something like fabreeze and pat dry with a microfibre cloth?

CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor · 27/09/2025 09:07

I febreeze my stinky teenager's blazer pits most days. Seems to work.

The dry cleaners will put it through a normal machine wash with extra chemicals for you as long as you sign a disclaimer. They saved one of my jackets like that.
I didn't know you could buy disposable sweat pads!!!

Honestly machine wash it on it's own on a delicate wash a squirt of white vinegar in the machine should get rid of the pit smells, dry it on a hanger.

If it's more ponging than stained, alcohol's your friend. Pure (isopropyl) if you have any, vodka if you don't. Either make a fine spray and leave it to evaporate, or dab it carefully with a clean cloth.

Amazon sells pure alcohol, I swear by it.

Oh no, honestly i think your jacket will be sturdy enough to go through a delicate wash.

Allwelcone · 27/09/2025 09:36

Well i.didnt even know disposable sweat pads existed- thanks and good luck op.

CarefulN0w · 27/09/2025 11:03

Can you still get those dry clean at home kits that you use in the tumble dryer? Back in the day, I can remember using them on coats that smelt of cigarette smoke after a night out.

Meadowfinch · 27/09/2025 11:08

I hand wash gently from the inside using woolite or a little baby shampoo and warm water.

I've done this with wool blazers and a silk evening jacket. Worked without damage or staining.
