Sensitivity to feel of trousers around waist - feels unbearable.

I am finding myself really struggling with how trousers are feeling at the moment and despite ordering so many pairs I am find them all unbearable to wear. Unless something fits perfectly I am so distracted by the feel that I have to take it off.

I have old trousers that are OK and it just seems to be new ones. If the waist is too tight I get really bad stomach ache and bloating so I have decided to just size up (I am slim, always been an 8 and am now buying a 10) but these are loose around the waist and feel awful in a different way.

I think I need to get elasticated waist and be done with it. I'm not sure if this is a peri-menopause thing or something else.

If anyone has any petite, comfy trousers they can recommend please let me know. I am an 8/10 and 5ft2.

I have often had this with shoes before and now just wear barefoot shoes and that really helps me.

Have you thought of dungarees or jumpsuits? I love my dungarees.

Heatherinlondon · 26/09/2025 18:48

A lot of the wide leg trousers that are around at the moment have elasticated waists. You can even get denim ones. If you have old trousers you like that are looking a bit worn, you could look on vinted and try to get a new pair of the same ones.

I am the same height as you and menopause has changed me from a size 10 to probably an 11 if this existed. Previously trousers were loose round the back of the waist but a good fit on the hips. 12 is slightly too baggy but not in a nice way.
Jeans am ok with if they’ve got a bit of Lycra, mainly M&S but not all styles.
work trousers I have the same issue as you. And the ones that might fit ok have a bit too much polyester in them.
I ordered 6 pairs of ordinary black trousers from M&S - 3 styles each in a 10 and 12.
5 totally not suitable and the remaining pair is ok ish but still in my wardrobe!
even the shopping and trying on is annoying leaving me in a slightly hot and sweaty state!

Got these but it was a case of the least bad pair!

Im currently living in halara jeans and m&s straight leg joggers i cannot tolerate much else tbh and even the joggers are sketchy like they dont fit right

Trousers are ridiculous fitting right now feels like a conspiracy 😂

Dresses!

user9637 · 28/09/2025 19:05

I’ve always had this problem too! Can only wear hipsters or elasticated waist rolled down.

verycloakanddaggers · 28/09/2025 19:09

How about low rise trousers, that sit much lower than your natural waist? Current trousers are often very high waisted. Are your old trousers the same waist height?

(I'd get the bloating/discomfort checked out too)

ShowOfHands · 28/09/2025 19:10

I had the same problem when I hit my 40s. Turns out I have multiple fibroids and I wonder if this is the cause. I can't wait to see how clothes feel after I've had some treatment. I currently live in elasticated waist wide-leg trousers or dresses.

GloryFades · 28/09/2025 19:11

I also did the barefoot shoe transition, and live in elasticated waists or dungarees / jump suits. I’m mid 30s but I also hate the feel of trousers around my waist. I often size up if I am buying non elasticated waists so I have a bit more space too. For jeans I only wear Ambela as they’re so stretchy and comfy.

Moomin37 · 28/09/2025 19:13

I am similar in that I get really annoyed by trousers unless they fit perfectly round the waist. I can’t stand high rise so stick to mid-rise, but they are hard to find.

I have fibroids and I find high-waisted trousers uncomfortable. However, I put it down to my IBS. I don't see how the fibroids would cause swelling so high up when they're in the womb (even if they make my womb swollen).

Thank you for your response. It is M&S I am having trouble with. I think I am a
size 9! 8 are just a bit too tight but 10 I feel I am swimming in. My older size 8 jeans from
m&s fine. I think they’ve changed.

I have not worn trousers since my last baby was born seven years ago, I wear skirts with Elasticated waists. Can stand trousers. My dd tells me it is a frumpy fashion fail. I don’t care though. Jeans to me are the devils work.

mamagogo1 · 28/09/2025 19:18

Dresses! I also have bamboo leggings and tunics

Unfortunately dresses just don’t suit me. Also for some reason they make me feel like a small child.

I have been really tempted by Ambela because of the stretch so hoped my normal size would feel more comfy.
do you rate them?

Thank you everyone. I think it’s going to be case of finding something that works and then buying more than one pair.

I do have IBS which I think is what makes it worse.

Absolutely rate them. They are quite hard to get hold of as the sell out so quickly, but I now have three pairs and they cost more than I would have otherwise spend on jeans, but they are by far and away the comfiest jeans I’ve ever worn.

HarryVanderspeigle · 28/09/2025 19:57

Have you considered a vest? I find all trousers are uncomfortable if they are directly touching my skin, but having a barrier is a game changer.

CheerfulBunny · 28/09/2025 20:01

I remember my mum complaining about this when she was my age. I 100% totally get it now, it's crap 😑I constantly pull things down onto my hips, even when they're not supposed to sit there. And don't get me started on pyjamas..

Yes I think they’ve changed. I have an old pair of what they used to call ‘Mia’ about 4 years old with slight elastic just on the back of the waist. Size 10 still fit well but they no longer make them. Maybe I’ll try eBay see if they have the same.
I don’t have any gynae or bowel issues but I do work long shifts and probably swell a bit as the day progresses,
(Plus like many shift workers I eat more carbs if I’m working late - delicious but bad stuff like doughnuts on a bad day)
