Is it mad to buy a 100% wool coat?

Or will it just pill horribly after five minutes?

I'm particularly considering Hobbs 100% wool coats like the Livia. I love the look of them and how warm they would presumably be. But at that price I'd want them to last a long time and continue to look smart for years to come.

Would I be better off getting a coat with 60-80% wool, do you think, for longevity / more structural integrity?

Any insights and experiences welcome!

Eek! That's a lot of dollar.

I have rarely had pilling, but on a shoulder, I found it would smooth using a soft clothes brush, lightly and spending time on it. I think it straightened out the fibres. I now do it if I ever see a brushed finish garment where the texture no longer looks right. I don't know the cause.

Bag or rucksack straps rubbing in that particular shoulder?

It's beautiful. But I'd worry it would get soaked and smell like wet sheep (obvs) in our drizzly cold winter.
ETA I don't like umbrellas

Is it fully lined, DD has a wool coat but unlined and it got stretched at the seat area. I think a lining would have stopped that happening.

I have a wool coat that I have had for 10 years and it looks brand new. I usually get it dry cleaned at the end of every season but I have thrown it in the washer and dryer a couple of times on the gentle cycle and it's been fine.

Very classy moth food. I like it though.

I love it! I am very tempted by it myself.

I have a black wool coat I bought in Italy about 20 years ago and it is still in great nick. I'm not as skinny as I was back then so I don't wear it as often as I'd like. I am very seriously looking at the Hobbs one now...

I have had several Hobbs 100% wool coats over the years and they have lasted beautifully. Hobbs' fabrics, trimmings and workmanship remain a cut above the other similarly priced mid market high street brands. Go for it!

I have several pure new wool coats in different colours and styles also 1 Jaeger and none of them have pilled.

I bought a 100% wool coat from jaegar for my daughter’s christening, she’s now 11 and it still looks brand new. It’s cosy, stylish and the best money I ever spent on an item of clothing.

I have a pure wool full length high back split single breasted coat which I have had for over 30 years. I don’t wear too often (formal, cold events!) but it is still in perfect condition. Classic wardrobe staple, you won’t regret it- oh, size up so you can layer and in case you put a bit on later in life (like me!)

Why would 100% wool peel? In fact, polyester and family have nothing to do in expensive wool coats.
