DP very sweetly bought me a Max Mara coat - it’s gorgeous quality and I know it was expensive, so I feel I must wear it.
Problem is… every time I put it on I feel like I’m heading out in my dressing gown.
It’s one of the wrap styles with a belt, quite long and in a light grey colour There’s no option to return it, so I need to find a way to make it work.

I agree. Admittedly I know nothing about 'posh' fashion but its giving me New Look vibes, like those unlined felt coats they sometimes sell.
I certainly wouldnt look at it and think it was expensive or designer.
TBH I think the only way it would look decent is if you layered another coat over the top!!LOL😆

I think new look copied maxmara on this one 😉

I would also balance the pale softness of the coat with something darker such as your monochrome suggestion. I also think switching out for a different belt would help.

I would opt for a chunkier shoe to add to the outdoors look, and provide more balance. Dark bag too.

Pushing up the sleeves would also work well.

I’m sure I’ve seen a video of Trinny styling this type of coat. As you’d expect from her it’s all monochrome or pop of colour, layers, chunkier boot, pushed up sleeves. Sorry, can’t find the link to share it.

Beautiful coat and I love that you’re trying to make it work.

Thank you, I’ll see if I can find it. generally I think her styling is pretty good

Love love love it. My budget for a coat is £50 though. You are very lucky. I think it'd look nice with slim fitting black clothes underneath, and stiletto heels.

SurferRona · 25/09/2025 20:22

Beautiful coat, please don’t desecrate it by chopping collar hood off! A scarf is too fussy imo given coat design (and would be too hot for me). I think dressing gown vibes come from the fabric belt, hard to pull that off unless you are rake thin. I would go thin fine dark layers, severe, and dark leather belt. That structure and masculinity will balance that unstructured fluid mass of lovely cashmere material. Ping me if you ever Vinted it please!!

cupfinalchaos · 25/09/2025 20:25

they do a gorgeous shiny gilet which goes underneath that will bring it to life, have a look at the collection. Really puts a different modern spin on it and makes it warmer for the winter.

Dh just bought me a MM jacket in light grey. I’m telling you you’ll learn to love that coat and wear it forever.

cupfinalchaos · 25/09/2025 20:27

How strange though.. dh bought my grey one at Harvey Nicks London on Sunday and there was no sale on anything!

Who are all these men buying their partners £2k coats 🤣

Namechangerage · 25/09/2025 20:49

Anyway, I like it OP! Agree wear with a block colour underneath, chocolate, maroon or black.

Funnily enough, that was one of the things I ended up with when I went into the shop. The salesperson styled me with that under the coat I bought (Ludmilla Icon in white), which I never ever would have thought to put together on my own, but I love them, both together and separately.

This is the gilet I got - they called it a gilet even though it has sleeves, but they have several in the same collection without. This one has a hood, since the coat doesn't, but you'd want one without. On its own, it's the lightest, warmest, most comfortable jacket I've ever owned.

Yes it’s a shiny hoodie without sleeves, think a few sparkly stones on the edging of the hood to give it a bit of sparkle as the coat’s simple. Don’t know how to tag or I would!

They have a trench with a similar look "built-in" to the coat itself

TBH op I think your DP has done pretty well. I mean for so many men it would have been an Ann Summers parcel...

Styledilemma89 · 25/09/2025 09:44

I’ll definitely keep the hood.
I’ve just ordered some lovely dark brown suede knee length boots with a heel and I have worn in this morning (just to try on at home) with a chocolate brown polo and that seems to work.

Perfect! Came on to say I wouldn't go black or navy but more rich burgundies, chocolate brown, plum etc. will be a fantastic autumn coat.

I agree.. The deep burgundy or rich browns would look luxurious with this coat. Also ‘winter white’ .

DramaLlamacchiato · 26/09/2025 10:10

Nearly three thousand pounds for a coat?!

I’d be right pissed off to have this bought for me when I hadn’t indicated I wanted it.

Lots of styling ideas here - Intrend is Max Mara group's outlet, they produce really good look books each season.

How annoying OP. You must make it clear that for purchases such as this, even if it seems a bargain in the sale you MUST go and try things on. Plus it is all part of the experience. We got served drinks and treated like royalty.

I tried about 6/7 coats on in Max Mara and quickly realised that the style you have got did not suit me as my shoulders are not broad enough. I ended up with a gorgeous coat that suits me way better and I wear all the time.

Try tying the belt behind back to create a more fitted look. Might need to sew on some belt loops for this if not already on coat. Then combining with the other great ideas 🙂

Yes, like that! It reduces the volume of fabric so that it can still look fluid but not swamp.
