Foundation for older skin

I’m 62, not particularly wrinkly but my skin is definitely ‘mature’. I’d like to be able to look a bit more polished when I go into the office/go out but I’m struggling to find makeup which frankly doesn’t make me look worse. I don’t like heavy foundation so I’ve tried a couple of tinted moisturisers (Clarins, Jones Road, No. 7) but they still tend to sink into lines or sit on top of my skin so to be honest I don’t think it looks any better than going completely makeup-free. Has anyone found anything worth trying or am I looking for the holy grail? I’m fair-skinned with historically combination skin but getting drier as I get older.

I get Erborian from Amazon - everyone’s right, it IS the best thing.

Onlycoffee · 23/09/2025 13:32

I have never found a bb or cc cream to be a good replacement for actual moisturiser and foundation.
Let your moisturiser sink in properly, primer if you want then L'Oréal true march foundation applied very sparingly.

I use my fingers then blend it in with a foundation brush. This wipes off any excess so it doesn't settle in lines or pores.

I use any translucent powder to set it, they all seem to be the same, just dab lightly with a big fluffy brush.

My skin is pretty good for an old girl but I do find foundations draw attention to very fine lines on my cheeks which I never notice with just corrector and concealer in the centre . Also my tone is cool, light with pink undertone and too many go orange on me. Might try the Chanel suggested .

If you can go to a Charlotte Tilbury counter, try various foundations there. I love the Flawless Filter (light coverage) and for evenings the Beautiful Skin. They both give my 72 year old skin a boost without making me look like a drag artist!

Witchymadwoman · 23/09/2025 20:57

Try Look Fabulous Forever. Their range is formulated for older skin.

Cocolapew · 23/09/2025 21:06

Fenty skin tint is lovely

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 23/09/2025 21:14

I like Hydraluminous and YSL Teint Eclat. Tempted to try Erborian. I was in Boots in Manchester at the weekend and they had Erborian.

TrimayrAcademy · 23/09/2025 21:56

I have just switched from Estée Lauder double wear which I found was too matte as my skin gets older. I am loving Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin it just feels nice and gives the your skin but better look.

Pandorea · 23/09/2025 22:02

I use L’Oreal Magic CC cream - nice and light and good colour correction with the bonus of being cheap!

The best ones i've found as my skin has got older, are Armani Luminous Silk, Nars Tinted Moisturiser and Lisa Eldridge Skin Tint (although that last one is very sheer on me and doesn't really look like I've used anything, so not sure I'd buy it again).

Following!!

I’m 58 and rather than cover my face in foundation, I use a Chanel one which exactly matches my skin colour and I dab it only where my skin tone is uneven.
In the summer I use Sienna X facial spray tan and a concealer.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 23/09/2025 22:40

I really like the Boots No7 Hydroluminous. Lots of other foundations seem to just sit on my skin, this goes on very naturally.
If you ask at the counter they will colour match you and give you a generous sized sample to go away and try at home.

Silverstag · 23/09/2025 22:44

I am mid 50’s and have worn foundation everyday since I was in my late teens. I used to love Estée Lauder double wear and the light version, then I tried Boots but I found they just don’t look right anymore. A friend swears by Laura Geller, I was sceptical as it looks like a powder, but I love it! It doesn’t settle in creases, it kind of goes on like a cream and you can have as little or as much coverage as you like.

RampantIvy · 23/09/2025 22:51

I'm a big fan of Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser. Most BB creams and tinted moisturiers look yellow/orange on my pale skin, but the Laura Mercier just makes me look like a better version of me.

stayathomer · 23/09/2025 23:01

Another that says primer makes all the difference!

PrissyGalore · 24/09/2025 07:35

I like the oil free Laura Mercier-not matte but not as shiny as the original which makes my face look sweaty. I use Vanilla which is a light true neutral shade and matches my skin. So many go a bit orange on my skin. I haven’t worn foundation for years-tinted moisturiser looks natural. Another one is Bare Minerals complexion rescue, a bit more sheer but lovely-but I had to mix shades to get the colour right.

Following with great interest!

I'm 51 and i've always used bareminerals. Recently i've found it a bit cakey, as my skin has gone haywire during peri. I need a heavier base moisturiser now, and the mineral powder just doesn't apply well over tacky skin.
I've been using this, and i'm really liking it (it doesn't clog in fine lines etc).
I use a damp sponge to apply a base coat of it then dab on some more with the sponge to build it (and i'm using elf setting spray too). I really recommend it 🙂

I'm 55 and I like this stuff too.

CuriousKangaroo · 24/09/2025 08:15

I have also switched from foundation to tinted moisturiser as I have got older. I have tried several but my absolute favourite is Chantacaille skin tint. Just evens out my tone, gives me a glow and doesn’t settle in lines.

I suggest you go to a Space NK and ask them to colour match you with a few and they will give you some samples so you can try each for a couple of days. Wearing them all day in different settings is key to not buying something that looks great in the shop but then you find is no good in others.

While Chantacaille is my favourite, the Nars and Laura Mercier tinted moisturisers are also good, and I think they stock Eborian too (but it wasn’t great for me). I would ask for colour matches and samples of each and then buy the one which suits you best.

Yes this. Space NK are good about giving you a little pot to try at home. Really worth doing to save an expensive mistake.

theDudesmummy · 24/09/2025 08:52

A PP mentioned Laura Geller. I use the Baked Balance and Brighten and really like it. You can put just a dusting or several layers.

FlossieKirkpatrick · 24/09/2025 10:03

Which primers do you recommend? I have very sensitive skin and would love to find one to work. I’m a big fan of the Bobbi brown foundation stick and under eye .

sammyspoon · 02/10/2025 08:04

I’m a big fan of the Erborian cc cream. I’m 49 with a fair bit of redness. I just finished my tube and thought I’d try the L’Oreal magic bb cream. It’s really very good at a fraction of the price. It feels nice on my skin and has a lovely finish. It’s perhaps not quite as moisturising and does not have the SPF of erborian. But I’ll definitely buy it again.
