Just a little warning about menopause and thinning hair

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/09/2025 15:49

I was just thinking about this today and it suddenly struck me that lots of women approaching menopause might not know how important it is to protect their hair follicles as they get older.

HRT will help with age related hair loss but something like 5% minoxidil will protect them belt and braces as what many women don’t know is the hair follicles can shrink and die over time and a hair will never grown back out of the follicle once it’s dead.

I notice lots of women around my age who now have thinning hair and might be thinking they could bring the thickness back just by taking supplements etc. I started using Monixidil about three years ago. I use a generic version and use it all over my head about twice a week. I probably spend about £30 every four months so it’s not expensive. I have more hair on my head now than I did five years ago. It’s just part of my routine now.

if you google there’s loads of studies about what hormones are involved but I just wanted to say don’t wait. If you think your hair is starting to get thinner try and start treatment early incase the impact on the hair follicles are such that it’s not possible to grow the hair back.

WhiteCatmas · 21/09/2025 16:18

I bought some then got scared of all the warnings about high blood pressure etc

TheDogsMother · 21/09/2025 16:19

Me too !

FurForksSake · 21/09/2025 16:19

Isn’t it hugely poisonous to cats? I lose so much hair that I’m terrified I’d poison the cat.

Yes, I am just googling just now as I am taking high grade iron for anaemia and one of the things which made me get my bloods tested was hair loss.
i also take preventatives for migraines which effect your blood pressure and I had chest pain for months after Covid as well as palpitations so the potential side effects I have found (effect on blood pressure, chest pain and fast heart rate) mean this would be probably be a no for me.
I would recommend anyone concerned about their hair to speak to their GP. They will be able to tell you what is safe to use depending what else you take.

I use Kirkland Minoxidil 5% and have excellent blood pressure! In fact all my recent bloods are better than they were in 2014 amazingly.

Just to add I’m not promoting any site and if you feel worried about side effects you’ve read then please feel free to find an alternative. I just wanted to tell women not to do nothing if they notice hair loss as there’s a chance the follicle will shrink and die and you just won’t be able to get it back.

Thanks for posting what you use! I’ve just. Hit 45 and noticed my hair really thinning. Which Kirkland product do you use specifically? I can only find stuff for men.

I agree - having met with a nurse about HRT and her explaining that with my medical history I shouldn't take certain things, as well as being shocked the GP upped my proprananol dose for migraines rather than checking if they were hormonal, was enough for me to realise this time of life can be a bit of a minefield. I also am aneamic and the hair loss was a big factor in flagging it to me as my Dr at the time had me on Prozac for depression because I could barely get out of bed. When the hair was coming out in clumps in the shower and I could barely bend to scoop it out of the plug every day I knew it wasn't normal for depression.

Yes it’s the stuff for men. 5% liquid, although you can use foam. It comes with a pipette and you put it on and massage in. For long hair the thickness of the length comes from the back of the head so make sure you put the product there too.

Where do you buy it from?

LeonMccogh · 21/09/2025 17:05

Was the “dread shed” as bad as you expected it to be?

It was so long ago I honestly can’t remember.

It get mine from minoxidilworld but there’s loads of places you can buy it from.

Are you a paid influencer to promote it?

lemonandorangeslices · 21/09/2025 17:33

People with thinning hair should see their GP and get their bloods checked. My hair thinned coinciding with perimenopause, but bloods showed that I was also very low in ferritin, which causes hair loss. Irregular and heavy periods linked to perimenopause will not have helped with this. I was put on high dose supplements and the hair loss stopped.

Ha ha oh yes. I am a paid influencer. You’ve got me absolutely nailed 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I work in a very low paid education job I’m afraid. If only I could get paid to talk about my hair care products. Sign me up.

I think so too

It is recommended that men apply minoxidil twice a day every day and women once a day. It is a life long commitment. As soon as you stop using it, any results achieved will be lost.

Yes, me too. Iron supplements are slowly helping.
