I was going to a concert yesterday and on the bus going along Kensington High Street when I fell in love with a wonderful dress someone was wearing. It was probably high designer but just in case it's not and someone has spotted it.

Black velvet, which I don't normally like. Very high neck. Swing A-line to knee. Long sleeves with cuffs. Very plain but somehow looked so chic. The woman had accessorised with pointed flats and sheer black tights.

The nearest shape but nothing like as nice is this one in John Lewis: https://www.johnlewis.com/kaffe-caca-high-neck-half-sleeve-dress/p110877095

The JL one is quite shapeless and horrible material though, this was more A line, and the neck isn't as high. Sleeves were full length (I hate 3/4).

Any ideas?

Oh I like this, I think this could be near enough! I have just ordered it, fingers crossed! Thank you all.

Actually Toast did a silk velvet dress a few years ago in this sort of shape, I am not sure if it came in black though.
I am wondering if the dress you saw was a vintage 60s one, as the shape you said was closest is essentially a copy of a sixties style. Lots of 60s patterns on Etsy, if you find the shape then you get it made.

If it is too long when it arrives you could get a seamstress to take it up. She might also be able to create a cuff/band effect to lengthen the sleeves with the fabric off the hem.

Thank you all - will post again when it arrives!

Oo I like the Reiss one! I wish I had an occasion coming up that warranted a velvet pink dress! It’s a bit much for a pint down the local!

If it’s the lovely matt texture and stiffness of cotton velvet that you liked, Thought do lovely cotton velvet. And for some reason Woolovers often sell them cheaply. Eg I have a previous season version (longer) of this dress and it is lovely fabric and fit - need to size up though. Not the shape you were looking for but the fabric sounds right. www.woolovers.com/womens/dresses/jamesina-organic-cotton-velvet-midi-dress-black-30664?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22500109587&gbraid=0AAAAAD7m7nw_pOP5jDQ6HBpiWEU_pUhea&gclid=Cj0KCQjw58PGBhCkARIsADbDilw7tHYirlmnngx9Y37p81MqEznBiBzz85X8aHtUyYNUrjR8R4Dy_8UaAvQJEALw_wcB

Definitely sounds like a past season me and em dress.

Velvet is a woven fabric, not stretchy.

That looks like the proper stuff. Remember to account for the nap if you make it yourself. And to shear the seams. And to press with another piece of velvet…….

Can you cut velvet on the bias still to make it hang, like with linen ?

Yeah, just make sure the nap is the same on both pieces.

Premier league Football! Went for decades avoiding watching it and now I'm almost as big of a fan as DH

I think this may be the kind of material: https://higgsandhiggs.com/product/100-cotton-velvet-black/. Any thoughts on where I might get a pattern from?

Good patterns are Vogue.
Expect to pay £20 for the pattern alone. You would also need threads lining interfacing etc.

Cotton velvet, viscose velvet and silk velvet all avoid the cheap sheen and poor way of hanging. Silk velvet is quite delicate and easier to tear etc.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/09/2025 19:50

That Batsheva dress isn’t velvet. It’s velour.

Some interesting stuff on there though.

I am thinking shape wise it sounds like the dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore to Gucci today (except in velvet) www.instagram.com/reel/DO9BXpwDLh6/?igsh=a2lpbDhidnV3NmE3

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/09/2025 08:41

How is that similar? Thats not trapeze line!

I think it sounds like a Batsheva dress. This is the only current stock black velvet dress but I’m sure there have been previous styles with a high neck and shorter. If you look on the website you will see she has a few different cuts but currently non in black velvet: https://batsheva.com/en-gb/collections/dresses/products/long-sleeve-caroline-dress-in-black-crushed-velvet?variant=45309450911993

100% polyester

ForAzureSeal · 25/09/2025 08:55

Could well have been vintage if quality etc was very high. I would try googling second hand velvet trapeze dresses to see if you can get something near enough that you can get altered.

lowlight · 29/09/2025 12:00

sounds like a me&em dress
