Hello,

I should probably update my username now but I’m a size 12, curvy, mid 30’s mum. I spend the majority of the year at the side of some type of sports field. I will spend the next few months at the side of the cricket nets and rugby and hockey pitches. Some of the mums manage to look really glam/trendy & put together even when it’s bucketing with rain. Please can you help me put together a wardrobe that will help me fit in but still flatter my frame? Thank you.

Lulu lemon plus a huge oversized waterproof coat? I’d say that’s the uniform around here!

Thank you. Lululemon leggings? What sort of tops would you suggest to go with them? I have a couple of pairs of the lulu align leggings which I wear for the gym but not leggings that I wear as casual wear.

Do you have any footwear recommendations? The mums near us seem to have moved on from wearing wellies to wearing ankle boots with calf socks that almost resemble walking boots. I can’t make out the brands.

I have an aisle Jacobsen raincoat that comes down below my knees and is properly waterproof and windproof. Helly Hansen also do longer than usual raincoats that are also windproof.

I would definitely think firstly about function - layers of merino wool underwear and good thick socks.

I have a pair of Meindl walking shoes that are incredibly comfortable and good for outdoors, although they were expensive.

But where we are, the sidelines up to 14 months ago were a mix of jeans, chords, tracksuits/leggings, slacks…and a broad mix of comfortable and warm tops on top. So nice leggings and a warm hoodie next to wool slacks and a chunky jumper next to chords and a couple of tops layered up under a wool cardigan.

lots of scarves, hats and thick gloves in winter. Everyone had a good coat - waterproof and windproof. A mix of sailing type jackets and waterproof trousers, the HH I mentioned above (similar to what you see on rugby sidelines), ski gear in depths of winter, or my kind that is more stylish for work rather than so functional looking (but incredibly functional in reality) - some waterproofs were less warm/padded and people layered up more under then.

There was almost never chat about clothes - more about the kids and the games and life in general and the weather…the weather!!!

Thank you. I’ll look at investing in layers as it seems more versatile. This is the kind of coat I have at the moment - not identical but very similar. It’s a little misshapen and rugged looking as I’ve had it a long while. In all honesty, there isn’t any chat about clothing on the sidelines, it’s more me and my insecurities making me want to fit in a little more and upgrade my wardrobe so that I can feel less self-conscious. Over the last 5 years or so, I have forgotten how to dress and lost all sense of my personality when it comes to clothing.

Are you looking for clothes you like and that will keep you warm or clothes that will make you feel like you fit in? Because the latter probably won't work - you might end up spending £££ copying them and still feeling not right. I'd wear what you have / like and then spend the money on addressing your insecurities.

I’m the same size as you and spend a lot of time watching kids’ sport. I tend to wear Acai thermal leggings, a M&S heatgen base layer, a nice jumper or sweatshirt and a big warm and waterproof coat over the top (my current one is Didriksons but I’ve had nice Seasalt ones in the past). Oh and some lined and waterproof winter boots (either Dubarry long ones or I’ve a pair of nice Ugg biker ankle boots with sheepskin lining).
