Husband's 50th, need an outfit, HELP!

Per the title - we're having a party for his 50th. Husband has lots of cool fashion-y mates, none of whom look or dress or act like 50 year old. It's a party in quite a nice bar in central London. I have no idea what to wear. I'm 5'5", big boobs, size 12 (14 top for boobs but not for waist/shoulders). OK legs, not amazing but not bad either. Triceps a bit floppy but otherwise ok arms and shoulders. Hourglass-ish figure, perimenopause has given me a little tummy but it's less.visible and more just I don't like things being tight on my waist. I generally look fairly young for my age. I like jewel colours, neutrals or black, no pastels. My usual style is barrel leg jeans with oversized shirt, or wide leg trousers with fitted blouse. I dont often wear dresses or skirts although I dont dislike them. I want to dress up but also look cool and simultaneously elegant. Brands I like are Whistles, Massimo Dutti, Ralph Lauren, Max Mara, Reiss, Me & Em, (but my budget is definitely high street!). Any ideas at all welcome, I've not got a clue!

What do you mean? Exactly?

I mean OP talks about clothes in a very agey way.

So....

Slinky987 · 20/09/2025 03:08

I'm obviously a little annoyed with OP because she talks about people 'dressing' and 'acting' like 50 year-olds.

So...

5'5" with tits?

Size 12/14?

Forget about fashion in the same way 50 year olds do.

No-one's looking at you.

Really? We wouldn’t have known. You’re attacking her. You could have said one thing. She’s already acknowledged it and instead you’re having a fine time insulting everything about her. She made an unthinking comment. You’ve made multiple purposeful shitty ones.

Ok.

Slinky987 · 20/09/2025 03:15

So we can make general ageist comments.

But not sizeist.

Tidy.

You’ve made your point (in a really nasty way) but you’re keeping on going.

Yeah I’m over 50 and I point out ageism too but I’m not an outright bitch about it, so there’s that. You’re tall and slim, but a bully. So there’s that too.

You’ll get it. Goodnight.

I don't think she does?

She's going to be with her husband at his 50th birthday party, & doesn't usually dress up loads - so feels a bit out of the loop?

His "cool fashion-y mates, none of whom dress or behave in a way that is sterotypical for people in their 50s" (her clarification on that point is in italics) will be there - & she just wants to look bloody great, that's all ...?

We do tend to form our own stereotyped ideas of such things as age-appropriate behaviour/clothing/language etc, whether we admit to that or not - & it's generally good to challenge these stereotypes. And that's why she posted here, to get some ideas. Not to be told that she can't wear the things that you or the models can - because, you seem to imply, she's both a bit shorter & a bit larger than you ... Surely you are thereby stereotyping her???

That's absolutely ageist.

How is it not?

Slinky987 · 20/09/2025 05:50

That's absolutely ageist.

What is 'stereotypical for people in their 50's'?

The whole sentence is wrong.

WatchingTheDetective · 20/09/2025 07:32

Oh come on, everyone knows what she means! For what it's worth, OP, I love that orange dress that was above.

Blimey this thread went a bit sideways. I'm not apologising again for saying something that, frankly, everyone understands and which some slinkier people are choosing to be artificially outraged about no doubt for their own amusement. Also not apologising for being average height and dress size. Thank you so much for the recommendations everyone, some lovely ideas here, I will have a happy evening on me&em and elsewhere making sure I find something that I can manage to squeeze my dumpy be-titted short self into so that the 5'9"ers of the world can not look at me while I'm out. FFS.

Didn't it just?? Totally odd, rather unpleasant - & as unsupportive as a saggy old bra ...!!!

I had fun anyway, looking at nice clothes on your behalf - & I hope you have spotted something on your hunt that will make you look & feel fab!

Patagonia21 · 22/09/2025 19:58

OP, just to add that 5’5 is a great height and that you are fortunate to have boobs too!
Your post was easy to understand but it clearly touched a nerve with one poster
Hope you find something which feels right and shows off your lovely figure x
