Post menopause (Ofc) and trying my best to keep the grey hair smooth. It’s a constant battle. I’ve tried so many things and I’m getting to the end of my patience!
help me Mumsnetters. What do I really need?

Collagen and biotin? I’m 43 and haven’t tried biotin but I’m impressed by the difference collagen has made to my skin and hair. I also like WOW products (online or in M&S).

Leave in conditioner and a better hairdryer.
Both have been absolute gamechangers for me.
Also about to try WOW as so many people have mentioned it to me. But even cheap Palmers leave in has been a miracle.

Johnsons kids spray detangler leave in (white stuff) might be worth a go. It works a treat on on my swim frazzled greying hair leaving a lovely shine and no weight.

Keratin treatment at a salon. Pricy but effective.

Camera21 · 18/09/2025 10:31

Thanks all.

I’ve got the purple shampoo ✔️. I think I need to be more consistent with the various treatments such as the ones you’ve suggested.
I use an oil when it’s looking dry- have to stop myself from overdoing it!

I have keratin every 6 weeks at a salon and HRT. Never been swishier. Im not grey though, I have never seen a glossy finish on grey hair, it tends to look more coarse

Greentrilby · 18/09/2025 10:36

I agree with others, a regular trim, better hairdryer and lots of conditioner. I’ve also just used the Wella colour fresh mask in pearl blonde and am impressed. It’s just given my hair a lift. No idea how long it will last though.

I liked K18 and L'Oreal Glycolic Acid (entire system). The right cut with the right technique also helps

I think hair is similar to skin in that what works for someone might not work for you... It definitely would help to know if there is a nutritional or hormonal issue and try to fix it from the root.

Elephant in the room but glossy healthy hair is easier to achieve if it’s healthy to start with. Are you taking a good multivitamin?

As with amazing skin you need to eat a balanced diet rich in Omega 3 foods, not smoke, not vape, no excessive alcohol and make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. A silk pillow and cold water rinses also help.

ChelseaDetective · 18/09/2025 14:37

A Japanese keratin treatment in the salon was the only thing that worked for me. It added smoothness and weight.

At home conditioners and blow drying did nothing, straighteners damaged it and I’d resorted to having it up in a ‘pineapple’ every day as I looked like that famous photograph of Albert Einstein if I tried having it down.

I still have to blow dry if I want it down but I can get a decent result now.

If she wanted ChatGPT’s response she would have asked for it. This forum is for hearing about humans’ personal experiences.

Very cold water final rinse. It works , no idea if there's any science behind it though.

henlake7 · 18/09/2025 15:03

Its depressing when you realiese you have already tried most of this and still have a pile of straw attached to your head! (only things I havent tried are any hairdresser treatments as they sound too expensive for me).
Right now I mostly hide my hair under colourful scarves!😁

I tried that when I was growing the dye out and kept getting pitying looks and special treatment as strangers were assuming I was having chemotherapy, even though quite a lot of hair was visible around my face.

I only twigged when someone said brightly (while holding a door open for me) ‘never mind, it might grow back curly!’ 🫣

Great, so now even her scarves are a shit idea? How is this supposed to make her feel?😑

Oribe gold lust hair oil. The business.

eyespartyparty · 18/09/2025 15:42

I just looked up the Oribe hair oil on Amazon - £56!!!!!! What!!

GameOfJones · 18/09/2025 16:00

@Nozache thank you! That reply screamed AI.

@Camera21 I get a Brazilian blow dry every six months at the hairdressers. Absolute game changer my hair has gone from a frizzy mess to smooth and sleek with no need to straighten it.

You do have to use shampoo and conditioner that are free from silicones, sulfates and salt but there are a fair few brands around (some of the Sukin and Faith in Nature varieties are fine) and I find I can easily maintain it for six months that way until it needs doing again.
