Wedding guest wearing a sling

MerryBlueBird · 17/09/2025 19:45

I have broken my arm and elbow 3 weeks before going to a wedding. What can I wear? The figure hugging lace dress I was going to wear won't be possible now as I won't be able to lift my arms up get it on. Nor the little jacket I bought.

I am early sixties, size 8/10.

The wedding is in a country house in early October. My arm will be in a sling. I feel the cold but am there for the disco in the evening too so may warm up.🤔

I need something easy to get on and reasonably smart. Help.

A pashmina or a dressy poncho. I'd also have a silk scarf over the sling to make it a feature.

TheCurious0range · 17/09/2025 20:01

Maybe something sleeveless, What's stopping you getting the jacket on are you in a cast or are the sleeves very fitted?

TheCurious0range · 17/09/2025 20:02

What colours/styles do you like and what's the budget?

OhNoNotSusan · 17/09/2025 20:02

will your arm be freer by then?

Milliways · 17/09/2025 20:04

I had the same issue with a fractured shoulder and ordered 3 poncho type tops from Vinted and one was perfect to wear with an easy pull on skirt.
My arm was at the disgustingly swollen and bruised stage and only in a sling (no cast) so had to cover it like that as couldn’t get it into any type of sleeve.

May be too cool for sleeveless as it will be October and I feel the cold. Guess I could though if wore it with a shawl or poncho etc?

The jacket is petite and I can't imagine it being comfy to get on or then wear with a sling. No cast so maybe it will be possible in a couple of weeks. At the moment, the pain is too great to contemplate it and I thought I had better have a Plan B!

What colours/styles do you like and what's the budget?

I was going to wear a teal/peppermint green lace dress with long sleeves that went to below the knee. It has an underslip that goes with it. My jacket was ivory and I had planned to wear a pearl necklace and carry a black and cream clutch bag and have a matching fascinator. Black stilletos (not very high). That was to take me through to the eve. dancing.

I actually quite like a tailored look but would also go for a classy dress if a jacket would go with it.

I have brown, curly hair and hazel/green eyes. I suit spring/summer colours or navy. Or red but don't think red or white would be ideal for the wedding. I would rather merge in the background than stand out in any photos.

I was lucky enough to find my dress on Vinted so didn't have to pay a fortune but my budget is flexible for a decent outfit as long as it's 2 figures!

This is nice for a winter wedding and there is a matching pashmina, I saw this in Hobbs and the material is soft

That is absolutely gorgeous and would look lovely as being practical. The colour would suit me too, so thankyou! It is a lot more than I was hoping to pay but it's certainly given me an idea of something I could look out for.

Hope so! Maybe I won't need the sling but could be touch and go.

Thankyou. I will take a look on Vinted. Pull on skirts/trousers with elasticated waist bands are now my favourite garments!

with a burgundy suit coat and burgundy heels &bag everyone loved it and I felt amazing . It’s a tie waist so can be slipped over your arm quiet easily I think xx https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/coats-jackets/dark-burgundy-unlined-tailored-coat/p/925208767?extcam=UK_PPC_PLA_Designer_Core_Google_DV_m_AGID_126584460956_PRID_9252130&_cclid=Google_Cj0KCQjwuKnGBhD5ARIsAD19RsaclmveCKYA4CrYRNT-J3dqX9CUAAI4QNiw6tUPGkySRbxEx3MoUxUaAhK5EALw_wcB&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=1930161284&gbraid=0AAAAAD2UatN9hsY-19AKEwBR85r_oV8hj&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuKnGBhD5ARIsAD19RsaclmveCKYA4CrYRNT-J3dqX9CUAAI4QNiw6tUPGkySRbxEx3MoUxUaAhK5EALw_wcB

Have a look at pretty kitty they hang really nicely, I had the waterfall sleeve version but the sleeveless might work better with your arm with a pashmina or a jacket, if you look at the reviews you will see lots of non models wearing them! The fabric is soft, but stretchy and heavy enough that it hangs well. Well priced too. I wore mine twice once for a wedding then for a work thing, then I lost weight and sold it on vinted.

cape blazer - I had a beautiful white zara one that they might still make. Trow that over a dress for the cold.

Jannergirl · 17/09/2025 23:18

I feel your pain - literally! Have had a similar injury - and agree that elasticated waists are the way forward! I wore ( smart) elasticated palazzo pants to a wedding, I think with a jersey top - all in a hotel so I wasn’t worried about the cold. The Hobbs dress looks gorgeous but without going into too much detail, do just think of the practicality of gathering all that fabric up with one hand when going to the loo 😳

MerryBlueBird · 18/09/2025 08:57

A wrap dress! Now, why didn't I think of that!? What a lovely outfit that is. Very smart but the coat is especially very reasonable and ideal with the dress. The shoes are elegant. Thank you so much!

Thank you, I'd never even heard of a cape blazer. What a clever idea. Practical but smart. Looks ideal for someone in my position!

Are you sure that you will be in a sling in 3 weeks time. I broke my elbow and arm earlier this year. After a week in a shoulder to finger cast, this was removed and I was then just in a lower arm splint. I also had a sling but only for a few days as was told it is important to mobilise your elbow. By 3 weeks I could move my elbow reasonably well and could raise my arm above my head. My elbow fracture was stable though and it may be different if yours was displaced.

Thank you for that encouraging tale. I am not sure, just told takes 6 weeks for a bone to heal and maybe longer for an "older woman"! I am 64.

I was seen by a nurse in a walk in centre in a town 16 miles from home as they had x ray facilities. I didn't see a Dr although I was referred to a fracture clinic in a city about 30 miles away who may write to me in 2 weeks!

To be honest, I was thinking of mobilising my arm myself when the pain allows as can imagine it will stiffen up and lose tone if I leave it in a sling for too long. It was only a piece of crepe anyway so doesn't seem to do much!🤔

Edited

It takes 6 weeks plus for a bone to heal. However, with elbow fracture it is important to wean off the sling and start mobilising your arm (ideally within one week according to nhs website and also the consultant I saw). It is painful/uncomfortable at first but gradually gets better. It is important not to lift anything heavy though for several weeks. I am actually older than you so I imagine you should heal just as quickly. My arm was back to full strength by 12 weeks after the fracture (I did have physiotherapy on nhs after the first 6 weeks).
