Hi, can anyone recommend a block or cake mascara as opposed to the more usual wand mascaras. TIA

My granny had one I loved. Placemarking!

Gettingbysomehow · 17/09/2025 14:42

I remember my mum used them in the 60s. I haven't seen any since.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/09/2025 14:43

Looks like Bain and Savon do them for £8.50. Who knew?

I may well be your granny’s age 🤔

Just found them but I was looking for recommendations rather than just sending.

LOL I doubt it. I'm in my 50s. Granny's been gone a long time.

My mum used the Max Factor one in a light turquoise case. I see you can get these as 'vintage' for about £35 ... but I'm only recommending this product if you're posting from 1965! They can't exactly be in mint condition, even if unopened.

Kryolan still do it, I think, and they're stage makeup so the product's probably effective.

Surely this is a case of technology superseding the original? I can't see what the benefits of a block mascara would be over liquid applied with a wand.

Actually I've been low-key thinking about changing to a block. My hands shake unpredictably, and the short brush would wobble less if it happens. I've gone back to block eyeliner for the same reason. Small brush; product more of a paste than a liquid = less scope for drastic errors.

Lasts longer and is more hygienic (as long as you don’t spit on it..) apparently.

I once won the one from Besame in a raffle. I tried it a few times but it wasn’t for me. So water soluble that it was melting off within the hour even though my eyes were dry.

So I suppose that’s an anti-recommendation for Besame!

Iheartmysmart · 17/09/2025 16:53

I tried the Bain and Savon one and wouldn’t recommend it. It’s not like using a normal mascara at all and you certainly don’t get the same effect. I found it to be quite waxy in texture and you need to layer it slowly to build up the colour. Took a while to dry between coats then flaked off quite easily. I have got dark eyelashes though so you may notice a better effect if your lashes are pale.

I've not tried this but there are brands making accessible make up for people with hand mobility issues. Here is an example.

Mainly not using the same brush for both eyes and the risk of contaminating the mascara in the tube if there is any hint of infection in one eye. Ive been using two separate, cleaned every time, wand brushes to see if I can reduce recurring eye infections. But this is a total PIA.

I remember the rimmel block mascara as a kid and it was great. I'd buy if it was easily available. Darkening, lengthening and buildable.

Thanks for your experiences. May need to rethink using conventional mascara using two separate wands.

Could you try a lash lift and tint OP or would that be too irritating with your eye infections?
