52 and no idea how to dress myself!

Well, I know how to physically put clothes on, obviously, but I have never had any idea of how to build a wardrobe, what suits me ect and Im hoping for some tips/ advice.
When I lived in the UK I was either in a uniform, office wear ( easy to follow a dress code) or jeans and a top. I now live in a hotter climate and live in shorts and vest tops. Some days I must look like a kids TV presenter. Ive done absolutely nothing with my greying hair for 6 months.
There are reasons for this - my DP's ran a business and from aged 11 I was basically left to get on with it without much guidance from them , then DM had a breakdown and was ill for years. This isn't about bashing them at all, as soon as mum recovered they were the most supportive parents/ grandparents, its just that I seem to have missed out on some basic skills in my early teens that Ive never got the hang of. I have a habit of self neglect / putting myself last if things is busy.
So after a bit of an intervention from my DD and DDIL Im trying to set myself up for sucess. Ive booked myself a cut and colour, plus booked a regrowth appt for 6 weeks later.
Im 52, fair complexion , blue eyes. Auburnish hair, now mainly grey but thats going to be sorted. Size 14-16 top and 16-18 bottom. Ive already gone through my clothes and got rid of anything that is not my size ( over 2/3 of what I had was too small) . I value comfort as I have back and hip pain .
Any suggestions where to start ?
Thanks in advance.

Other than hotter climate you’ve given no context regarding your lifestyle and what you need to dress for. Nor whether you’re planning to shop locally or online or in the UK. Also, what is your budget for new clothes?

I work part time but have a uniform. We don't socialise much at the moment but Im hoping to change that. Im go back to the uk every 6 months and am planning to shop there. Budget wise - id say mid budget, I like M&S, Wallis, Next .
