Lightweight and waterproof boots

I've been reading posts asking for decent waterproof coats and have found them helpful.

Please can I have your recommendations for some lightweight and waterproof walking boots or trainers?

I suffer with back and leg pain and I need footwear to comfortably walk my dog in the increasingly wet weather.

I find wellies too heavy and flappy and they make my hips ache, even the Chelsea boot style ones.

I have wide feet.

I also need them to be grippy.

Check a camping shop like blacks or trespass

I have goretex Merrell walking shoes. I also have wide feet. They’re excellent. My boots are berghaus, again goretex.

dh has waterproof Brookes walking shoes which may be a bit lighter.
He had various pains in feet and knees which were greatly improved by having gait analysis at a podiatrist and investing in custom 3d printed insoles as well as these shoes. Expensive but very much worth it as we love walking.

Thank you, Errol.
Great ideas there.
I love walking too so, although I am on a tight budget, I would rather buy a good quality pair of boots than waste more money on multiple cheap pairs.

My boots last years. I get through the shoes somewhat faster but they’re my default footwear and often on hard surfaces so they’re not costing a lot per kilometre walked!

The merrels had a significantly less expensive option using one of the alternative membranes rather than goretex. Afaik these newer materials work fine but I didn’t like the colour (well…I did, but the green wouldn’t have gone with everything whereas mine are the bland grey). Goretex items are generally high quality in part because the company insists on approving the designs of everything it goes into (as well as because of the quality of the membrane), but in this case the design would presumably be the same with the cheaper alternative.

Walking boots are all about what feels good for you. Ideally you should go to an outdoor shop and try some on. I’ve got wide feet too and generally walking boots are cut more generously width wise, but I’d specifically recommend Meindl comfort fit, merrell, keen, and the delightfully named Hanwag bunion fit. Or men’s boots as they’re often wider by default. Millets is pretty good for selection, Cotswold outdoors is my favourite. Mountain warehouse generally only stock their own makes in store for boots.

Walking boots look heavy and clumpy but these days they’re often very light and nice to wear.
