WTF is going on with my face?

Aroundtheworldinaday · 15/09/2025 09:34

I’m 52, menopausal (on HRT). I’ve always had good skin, but this past 12 months I seem to have lost ALL the elasticity.
I look back on photos from 12/18 months ago and I look so much better.
I’ve tried collagen powder, cheap creams, expensive creams, serums, retinol and vitamins. Not sure they’re doing much, well, clearly they’re not doing much.

I don’t smoke, I drink when out with friends / family. I know I don’t drink enough water, something I’m trying to alter.

I am this holds fingers together close to getting some work done. I don’t want a glass like forehead, I want to still recognise myself, i definitely need to be able to frown and move my face, but I’d like it to look fresher.
I’m thinking profhilo - anyone else had it?, would Botox be better. I don’t want to look ‘overdone’

I never thought I would be bothered about getting older, the changes in my body etc , but I genuinely hate the way I look at the min.
I exercise, I eat well, but can’t seem to find anything to make my face look knackered!

At your age (sorry and no offence - I'm much older) only surgery will fix the sag.

Threads work but they're excruciating and only last a year or so.

You need a facelift (vertical restore/deep plane with fat transfer is the answer).

I had hyaluronic acid injected a few weeks ago around my lips (don’t have wrinkles anywhere else so it was really bothering me). Relatively painless and something that doesn’t change your muscles/skin like Botox. Love it as my lips are also a bit fuller, something that I dreamt about for years. .

sciaticafanatica · 16/09/2025 19:31

@BackInFiveMinutescan I ask how much was it? And where did you have it done?
you look amazing by the way !

FeetLikeFlippers · 16/09/2025 21:15

Erm, maybe it’s because you are 52 and menopausal. I’m afraid the way you age is largely down to genetics. I know somebody in their 60s who chain smokes and has the skin of a 30 year old, and somebody with the healthiest lifestyle I’ve ever known who looks way older than they really are. But if it bothers you that much I suppose you could try having some toxins injected into your face and join the legions of clones out there.

newfriend05 · 16/09/2025 21:24

Had both , I personally love profhilo gives a nice glow and more bounce to your skin and Botox is great for crow lines and it stops me look miserable

IOSTT · 16/09/2025 22:09

@BackInFiveMinutes do you have an “after” photo that hasn’t been blurred/softened?

I had Profhilo. Absolute waste of time. Could see no difference. Go for the Botox, much better!

Same here. Profhilo not worth it. Botox is defo worth it. A few tiny pin pricks each side and it’s done. I also get Tret from Dermatica. I have hooded eyes though and will likely take myself off for an upper and lower eye lift at some point.

citygirl77 · 16/09/2025 22:19

I have started Sculptra and have had one treatment. I am expecting to need 4 treatments. I don’t really have wrinkles, but at the age of 59 have definite sagging. I really hope this makes me feel better.

PhilMitchellsleatherbomber · 16/09/2025 22:29

The sag has set in for me, my lower face and neck are melting off my skeleton, I’m 57, I have Botox for my 11’s but I’m not going to waste my money on any other treatments, surgery is the only thing that will fix the sagging, when I pull my skin back the difference is amazing so I’m saving up for a face lift for my 60th, might get my eyes done as well and hopefully that should set me up for my later years.

Mistyglade · 17/09/2025 00:55

Where are you based? There are excellent skin clinics that assess your skin and advise you about best treatments.

CynicalRaven · 17/09/2025 01:07

Peptides that are packaged correctly and oral collagen have done wonders for my sagging skin. I have found that Paula’s Choice is the best available skincare there is the products are reasonably priced and always packaged correctly and that is really important. I swear I have no connection to Paula’s Choice except I have used here products for 10+ years.

Lifeinthepit · 17/09/2025 07:11

What can be done about lines round your top lip. I think I can cope with laughter lines and forehead lines but lip lines really bug me. I worry about the indentikit lip look which quite a few friends have though, so haven't really investigated properly. Is there anything really subtle?.

OpenLilacTraybake · 17/09/2025 07:18

During and after menopause, collagen production drops rapidly That affects elasticity, hydration, and firmness.

🙄 so tedious. This is the Style & Beauty board where people generally discuss these sorts of topics. Not everyone wants to just give in to Mother Nature.

Handelgently · 17/09/2025 07:53

You are getting old - try to enjoy it!

BlueEyedBogWitch · 17/09/2025 07:53

If you’re in Scotland go and see Darren McKeown. Despite his startling appearance, he is a magician.

He’s a qualified plastic surgeon, not an ‘aesthetician’, and subtlety is his speciality. I have fillers and Botox, and nobody would know in a million years. He put me back to ‘myself’.

I travel hundreds of miles to see him, but I understand not everyone could be arsed!

Agree.Anyone can make that point and frequently and boringly do. It's not a particularly original or helpful post so I don't know why people waste their time writing it.

Mackerelfillets · 17/09/2025 09:04

I have a full face botox session twice a year and have had filler along my upper lip line for deep wrinkles. A few years ago I had an upper blepharoplasty for droppy eyelids. I still look like me just refreshed. I still have wrinkles just not deep ones and I still look like an older lady. Im 55 and I'd say Iook late 40's, early 50's. No plans for anything else, will just continue.

Hi, I didn't take many at the time, but here are a couple post op...

WTF is going on with my face?

StartingAgain25 · 17/09/2025 09:23

I've not seen any comments about Castor Oil yet. I'm younger than you but have moisturised at night with castor oil for about 2 years and it's made my skin so supple and soft. It's known as "nature's botox".

I tried retinol and it broke me out in a scabby rash, so I'm sticking with my castor oil. I just buy a big bottle from Holland and Barratt and decant it into a small pipette bottle. It needs to be thinned down a bit, so I thin it with frankincense.

I also get botox in my forehead and 11s, take collagen and eat a wholefoods diet and drink a lot of water.

I'm only 41 but my lower face looks a bit saggier this year. I feel I've suddenly lost a lot of collagen and/or oestrogen. I've lost some fat through strength training too, which hasn't helped, but I love it so won't be doing anything to change that.

Belladog1 · 17/09/2025 09:28

Following this thread.

I'm 51 and starting to panic about aging. I have always looked younger than my years, but I think I look my age now. I take collagen tablets and I moisturise twice a day. I tried botox once, but it migrated to my eyelid, so I couldn't see out of it for weeks .... so I can't do that again. I tried filler in my top lip which hurt a lot, but I couldn't tell the difference and it cost hundreds of pounds.

Holluschickie · 17/09/2025 09:30

I think most people look their age, whatever they do. As I said I have very good skin, but at 53, I still look my age or maybe a year younger at most.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 17/09/2025 09:53

I have Botox and Profhilo, in fact I am having my Profhilo tomorrow and I can really tell it is due. Both work really well for me. I still look like me, my face still moves, I just look less drawn and better rested. Botox is relatively painless, Profhilo hurts a lot! But it takes 10 minutes, and its worth it, for me.

No answers, but this is quite normal. According to the American Academy of Dermatology

"Studies show that women’s skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. After that, the decline is more gradual. Women lose about 2% of their collagen ever year for the next 20 years."

This fills me with fear because I'm not even at menopause yet. Still having periods, and I've been on HRT already for 3-4 years.

However, I was coming on here to agree. Im 52, and I feel like in the past two years, my face has "melted". When I lie down, there's a whole load of excess sagging skin gathering around my neck. It looks really weird, and I'm also wondering whether there is anything I can do about it to make it look better. 😫

I have lost significant weight - 4 stone. I'm not thin now, but I'm "overweight " rather than obese. Last time I lost significant weight, at 40yo, my skin seemed to bounce back better.

Now I feel doomed to look really strange the rest of my life. 😔

I turned 60 this year. I have never looked my age - not flexing, just being honest - but wanted to look a bit fresher. I had HIFU in April and three sets of polynucleotide facials from May-August. Both treatments are meant to take a few months to work. I definitely look younger and more toned. It’s not cheap but they both work in a subtle way - you’d never say I’ve had work - and I’m really pleased. I had Botox 18 months ago and it made my eyes look weird - like Spock. Won’t have that again.
