Has anyone hung on to a hairstyle that might not suit them now?

I have med blonde hair to bra strap length. It's in between wavy and curly, very fluffy and doesn't take well to all the methods out there. Seems to do better with minimal product and fuss.

As my hair is now this long, it hangs in a sort of uninspired fuzz down my back like a wet packet of maggi noodles Grin. Maybe not that bad, but it's getting there.

I really don't think it suits me, but I was so keen to keep growing it. But it's not realistic is it? I am 50.
I am sharing two pics:

  1. is the same as how i wear it day to day.
  2. is a shorter cut that I am tempted to go for. Luckily I am looking pretty good in all other ways, considering.

Has anyone else hung onto a hair style that maybe doesn't work now? I see a lot of posts here about everyone going longer and longer which seems to be the current trend. I don't suit very short hair so would never go above shoulder, but need to make up my mind!

They don't seem to be the same hair type.
I'd go for pic 2 but about 4 inches longer.

Yes, well, according to my mother!

I'm 54, greying blond hair, also bra strap length, wavy to curly. It's great the day I wash it and faff about with it but the next few days it's also tied up.

But the style you've linked is exactly what I'm thinking about!

I'm thinking I'll just go for it. After all, it's only hair and grows back! I have a couple of friends going through chemo treatment and they've now lost their hair, sort of put a perspective on things.

So, go for it, OP! You will not be alone!

My hair type does both kinds of curl/wave so not hard to reproduce.
Mine does tend to straggle at the ends regardless of the care I take. Prob just genetics.

Thanks!
I love my hair long but it looks like shit after a certain point.

It isn't even age, it was always like this, lol.

Can I suggest that you go shorter gradually?
I've gone from mid back length to just on shoulders. If you've had your long hair for years, it does take a while to get used to it shorter. I'm already feeling odd. Yes, I know, it grows.

I see your point. I took an inch off last week and it is still noodle-like unfortunately.

Many mistakes in youth taught me that cutting solves nothing. But I am just stumped as to how to wear it. There's like a mass of fuzziness over the top layer of all my hair that isn't helped by product or method. Maybe some decent updo's will help!

My hair grows very slowly, and is probably Pic 1.

If you cut an inch off, you won't really see a difference. Pic 2 is an expertly cut layered hairstyle that has been styled.
You need a hairdresser who can cut hair that has kinks/waves.

Op have you tried a Brazillian blow dry? I did it myself at home and it really worked to eliminate the fuzzy frizz.

henlake7 · 15/09/2025 13:04

Maybe try going shorter abit at a time as PP suggested.
Im currently growing mine out as I tried the short 'over 50' style and sadly my hair looked just as naff as it did longer! At least longer I can tie it up or back and have more options.
