Natural alternatives to perfume?

manicpixieschemegirl · 14/09/2025 14:15

For various reasons I’m looking to give up ‘normal’ perfume, which will be very difficult as I’m a total perfume fiend.

Can anyone recommend some really lovely natural alternatives? I tend to go for more fresh or sweet floral scents if that’s relevant.

Faith in nature toiletries are only perfumed with essential oils, would that be acceptable to you. Their Lavender and geranium hand and body lotion smells lovely and 'fresh and floral'
I try to avoid highly perfumed anything really as tend to be allergic.

Sana Jardin are a clean perfume brand, I have a few of their scents and they're lovely.

In Marrakech earlier this year I bought a bunch of those solid perfume bars they make - I keep them in a bowl and pick them at random to layer the scents. As far as I know they are natural ingredients, and you can buy them online on sites like Etsy.

Neals Yard do 2 lovely, essential oil based perfumes, Frankincense, and Rose.
And their other products smell gorgeous.

Or, buy a few skin safe essential oils (lavender, geranium, frankincense, petigraine/sweet orange/neroli) and some base oil (sweet almond, jojoba) and make your own perfumes?

Lots of info on "how to" on the web, if you Google.

My dogs like to roll in fox poo, but don't suppose that's quite what you had on mind.

I agree Neal's Yard make lovely products. I like their Woman's Balance roller ball and sometimes use this as perfume. Cosy cottage soap also make roller ball essential oil perfumes. The Neals yard scent lasts longer out of the two.

Dd makes her own perfume for herself but has gifted it to others too. She uses essential oils mixed with water…
orange and rosemary
ylang lang and vanilla
coconut and honey
mint and clove

You don’t say why you’re giving up ‘normal’ perfume - so I hope this isn’t a wasted suggestion. If you’re a perfume fiend you’ll probably want something to get your teeth into - this book is old but excellent and will help you to craft your own ‘natural’ perfumes (in addition to all the other things it offers):

The Fragrant Pharmacy

The Fragrant Pharmacy opens the way to a whole world of fresh possibilities. It is a new approach to nature through one of its most powerful forms - those fragrant 'essential oils' drawn from flowers and grasses, trees and roots, leaves and fruit, that...

I make my own solid perfumes with just essential oils jojoba oil and plant wax. They’re so easy to make and they smell great.

This sounds wonderful @SingingintheRadiator Any chance of you sharing one or two of your recipes, please? 😁

I use the basic recipe here

I don't really have any specific recipes for essential oil blends, I just mix up what I fancy. But one of my favourites is three drops lemon, three drops lavender and two drops rosemary.

Another good one I've recently discovered is four drops lavender, three drops cedarwood and three drops frankincese. But your taste might be wildly different!

Of course, you can also just use a single-note, and that's great for things like rose or sandlewood.

DIY Vegan Solid Perfume

Did you know that you can easily make your own vegan solid perfume using candellila wax, jojoba oil, and essential oils? Here's how!

@SingingintheRadiator thank you so much!

Forgot to mention, I'm vegan, so I use plant wax, but you can use beeswax instead if you like the smell!
