Warm waterproof coat - Didriksons, Sweaty Betty or Uniqlo

I’ve lost 5 stone in the last year so in need of a new coat. Something waterproof, super warm and not too ugly. Need for dog walking and other winter outdoor stuff.

I’ve had a Didriksons one the last couple years that’s been great but it’s really not attractive although very practical as fully waterproof and huge pockets

I like the look of the sweaty Betty nimbus and the Uniqlo down coat too but not sure how waterproof they are

The Didriksons Erika has a slight shape to it so maybe a bit more flattering. I also like the leya as a bit longer

Ideally under £250.

Any suggestions?

I’ve been looking myself. I’ve found that waterproof, warm & stylish is almost non existent & usually costs £££.

Brands I’ve looked at include Mackage, Peak Performance, Patagonia & Fjallraven. I like this one but it’s only rain resistant.

DH has just had this delivered from Thrudark.

They do it in black & camo & I’m tempted to get one myself. It’s not overly stylish but it’s great quality. They also go to great lengths to say it’s not a dry robe 🤣

Edited to add that Patagonia have a sale on currently, so you could potentially get a waterproof jacket & a down vest or jacket to go under for £250.

Uniqlo down isn't waterproof. Their stuff layers really well though, (so bigger waterproof jacket or trench over down coat)

Otherwise its the seasalt Janelle for waterproof AND warm.

Following as I need a new coat and living in Scotland and spending every weekend watching my son play football I need something warm and waterproof

trainedopossum · 13/09/2025 12:30

I have a long SB raincoat which is very waterproof but it’s sort of like thin scuba fabric so quite sweaty.

As upthread the ‘showerproof’ Uniqlo down jackets are really not suitable for anything but the lightest drizzle but great for layering under a waterproof jacket.

I’ve just bought a Didriksons Lana (was half price so just under £100 which is a bargain) and I love it. I’ve decided on good thinner waterproof with layers underneath as it’s more practical than trying to find the unicorn coat which is not ugly, very waterproof AND warm. I don’t think it exists! I liked the Lana because you can pull it in at the waist so you can still have a bit of shape and not look like you’re wearing a sack. It’s a bit ‘boring’ but I like that it’s simple.

The model on that thrudark ;)

yes so hard to find something that isn’t ugly but is still practical. I have lovely looking coats but I freeze in them!

I like my hooded trench in that funny rubberised fabric and layer it with a padded body warmer. Down is best but any are great. I do have a Didrikson but it faded so fast I was ever disappointed. I wouldn’t call it stylish but it is a great quality performance coat. You could try Canadian brands. They know how to make performance coats that look good try Chlorophyll

Sorry I spelt that incorrectly

good to know re Uniqlo, Thankyou. They seem to make out it’s waterproof

I had a joules padded coat a couple years ago and got soaked through more than once!

You could look at stutterheim for waterproof and somewhat stylish?

Britpopbaby · 13/09/2025 15:01

I’d stick to what you know and go for the Didrikson.

I’ve now bought a Didriksons josefine for £84!! Same model I had before but smaller

I then think I’ll buy a slightly more stylish, still warm but not waterproof one

Sorry to resurrect this threat, but can anyone let me know how the Didriksons hoods adjust? Do they just pull in around the face, or is it an adjustor at the crown of the head? I much prefer the crown style, as it is on a North Face I have, but am looking for something a different style and can’t tell from the pics how they adjust

SurreyisSunny · 06/11/2025 20:06

@lipgoss they don’t really adjust but of all the coats I own their hoods are by far the best for actually keeping the rain off

The Didriksons Lana I bought adjusts at both the crown and you can pull it in at the front too.

lipgoss · 06/11/2025 20:47

Thanks both, super helpful! I see they’re doing up to 50% off certain past styles starting on Monday, so will hang fire and see if I can get a bargain!
