I have been eyeing up these dresses for a little while as they’re my kind of style. I’ve decided to go for it and place an order for their Story dress (in blue) but I’m unsure on the sizing even after checking the size chart. I’m a size 10 (uk) but their measurements for size 10 put it as Medium and the measurements given seem they’d be too big for me. I’m thinking of ordering in Small instead based on the measurements they give, what do people think?
also thoughts on the dress in general! TIA.

It’s quite casual and if I was a size 10 (I’m definitely not) I’d be showing off my figure in something far more fitted. It’s basically a linen shift dress and I would never guess it was £170.

Seasalt had a very similar style for around £70 and there are Made in Italy dresses like this for £30. The bow is a cute addition but if you have long hair it won’t be seen.

Looks like something my mother used to wear in the mid 1960s.

timesinpunai · 13/09/2025 00:15

1960s is exactly the look I’m going for as it’s similar to some other dresses I already wear. It’s my favourite decade for fashion. I do have some more figure hugging clothes but I like a mix of fitted and loose depending how I’m feeling.

If you look at the bottom of the dress it actually looks see through.

ChelseaDetective · 13/09/2025 00:23

I like it, OP - I think it will look really fresh. The early sixties is an era we don’t see much of and the neckline is lovely.

Sixties shifts are meant to be stiff to stand away from the body so quite a lot of ease would be right.

Measure yourself and work out how much ease you’d get with the garment measurements. I’d give yourself quite a lot of room.

’sizes’ are anyone’s guess. You have to get a garment that fits how you want it to. I’ve got everything from a ten to an eighteen in my wardrobe and they all ‘fit’.

Edited

Ditto on all points. I like the shape of the dress, the collar and the little bow.

I quite like the style but it’s very thin fabric and I agree with the previous poster, it’s see-through. It doesn’t look like something which costs £170.

Sandyshandy · 13/09/2025 06:36

Grayson Perry vibes.

The reviews are mixed so I’d take a look at those before making a decision uk.trustpilot.com/review/dresslemuse.com

I think it’s a lovely dress and I agree about the 60s vibe. I think that how well it works will depend on the fabric - I have a few linen clothes from the 60s and they’re much heavier and hang better than anything similar I find today. However it says it’s premium Lithuanian linen which has a good reputation so that’s hopeful.

Re sizing, I always struggle to work this out so I’m not the best person to advise but I agree with a pp that it’s intended to be a loose fit plus too big is easier to fix than too small so I’d size up.

If it doesn’t work out, and depending on whether or not you want it for a specific event, you could try hunting down a genuine 1960s dress - they’re still around. Or you could buy a 1960s dress pattern, the best linen you can afford and find a seamstress, although that would probably end up costing a fair bit more than that dress.

I spend a lot of time looking at - and tracking down - size guides, because for the same measurements I'm anything from a 6 to a 10 (nominal UK sizes), depending on the brand. Here you're lucky, because they quote garment measurements, so at the risk of stating the obvious, measure dresses or tops you have that you reckon approximate the kind of fit you're after and order accordingly.

I personally have found that dresses like that tend to come up more sack-like on flat-chested me than on the models, who are sometimes artfully posed to disguise a bulky cut. I now look very carefully at how the model is standing (and take into account whether the brand seems generally to target women who are my shape).

On this forum I’ve learned to take that tired old jibe as a sign that I’m on the right track!

ChelseaDetective · 13/09/2025 11:55

@timesinpunai Having said I like the picture of the dress - and I do - I would be careful about buying. While it seems legit and the products sent are more or less what people ordered there are multiple reports of items being smaller than expected, especially on the bottom half - oddly proportioned and thin. Thin unlined linen may be disastrous in a dress that is supposed to ‘hold its own’.

I also found a lot of complaints about returns being made very difficult if not impossible and non existent customer service. Its becoming a very familiar story.

There are so many dropshippers, dodgy and non-existent clothing companies appearing now, especially on instagram, They’re very convincing and very tempting. Amazing pictures (AI, of course), cheap prices and long postage times seem to be the main signs.

Agreed.

Setting aside any quibbles about the advisability of dealing with this company how unadventurous are someone's clothes' choices if a classic, plain 1960s shift dress is giving "Grayson Perry" vibes?

I don’t know why it reminds of Perry, it was just my first impression, maybe the general colour, silhouette, bow? different people see different outfits differently and that’s what I think of this dress.

The Amazon link may well be a rip off copy rather than the same dress. The Etsy link is the same dress.
