Teachers want shoes do you wear?

I’m doing a PGCE and am
starting my placements in a few weeks. My really comfy shoes are either too summery or too casual. What do you recommend?

Depends on the type of school. My primary school is fairly casual I wear Doc Martins in the winter alongside other ankle boots, Birkenstocks in the summer and some fairly smart trainers such as Nike airs all years round. This is completely acceptable where I work. It wouldn’t be at the school my daughters attend.

Thanks. I suppose the issue is I just don’t know! I’m doing 3 placements. The first one starts a week on Monday and I’ll probably on find out where it is on Friday so I was hoping to get some this week. It’s a practical subject but in secondary, where I believe it’s usually a bit smarter than in primary.

I wear Clarks comfy low heels.

theonlyonestillawake · 12/09/2025 20:32

I'm a middle leader in a secondary school and wear chunky loafers, low heeled ankle boots or structured flats. Too flat really hurt my feet.
I've bought some new Clarks loafers, but can't bring myself to break them in enough to go a full day on my feet.

FourEyesGood · 12/09/2025 20:35

I’m a Secondary teacher and I wear FitFlops all-black leather Rally trainers. Comfy and just about smart enough.

wafflesmgee · 12/09/2025 20:36

I teach primary
I wear Gabor ballet pumps, as they are super comfy but don’t wear out quickly, I also wear smart trainers on PE days.
In winter I have a pair of Barbour style doc martin fur lined ankle boots and a pair of black lace up granny style brogues.
unfortunately the cheaper shoes wear out very quickly! I have a spare pair of crocs style shoes in my cupboard in case I get the paints out/have had to wear power heels

I hope the placements go really well! Congratulations on getting into a PGCE, teaching is a great job.

In the summer, flat sandals normally Birkenstock.

There rest of the time Dr Marten boots or shoes. I also wear plan black leather trainers.

Diggetydawg · 12/09/2025 21:14

Never heels, you're on your feet too much for that.

HedyPrism · 12/09/2025 21:16

Secondary teacher here in labs (no soft carpet!)
Clarks brogues
Chunky boots
DM Mary-Janes
Smart leather trainers (dress code has just thankfully changed to allow this).

Octavia64 · 12/09/2025 21:18

Secondary.

plain black shoes of various types - docs, ballet flats, etc. hotter are not fashionable but they’re good for being on your feet all day.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/09/2025 21:31

I’m contemplating the Fitflop Rally, but our dress code is quite smart and I’m not sure if I’d get away with them.

I usually wear DM boots or some squishy Clarks brogue things in winter, but I really need something new - just not quite sure what.

LadyRoughDiamond · 12/09/2025 22:43

Clark’s and M&S loafers, some great, hard-wearing Grenson lace ups from Vinted, and I’ve just bought a pair of pointy ballet flats from Jigsaw that are so soft I feel like I’m wearing slippers at work!

user1469569516 · 12/09/2025 22:47

Art teacher here, and for me it's Clarks Funny Dream shoes.
They resemble Cornish pasties, offer great support and last for years.
Have a look on Vinted, Marketplace or eBay for a bargain.

IndieRocknRoll · 12/09/2025 23:00

Primary teacher here.
Trainers on PE days
DMs in winter
chunky leather platform sandals in summer
I also have a pair of smart leather trainers that I wear all year round. There’s definitely a lot of trainers now compared to 5-10 years ago!

Asuitablecat · 13/09/2025 16:36

Dm boots or shoes. Bit disappointed to be honest, dm boots were rebellious once. And it actually annoys me that I'm allowed to wear them, but kids who walk miles to school aren't.
Clarks brogues.
Loafers. But loafers aren't good for my ankles.

ProfessorRizz · 13/09/2025 16:52

I’ve actually started wearing Adidas Gazelles all the time, as have many of my colleagues. I wear opaque black tights and dresses/short skirts/skorts with them. I think it’s less important to ‘dress up’ these days, as long as you’re clean and tidy.

A lot of secondaries have quite strict dress codes still. I very occasionally sneak a pair of plain black Stans on with long, wide leg trousers, but definitely couldn't get away with Gazelles.

Smart plain trainers, loafers, ankle boots and flat chunky knee high boots. If you are doing a practical subject you don’t want to be in high heels!

UniversityofWarwick · 13/09/2025 18:13

Not a teacher but I work in a nursery. I wear Crocs. Not the clogs, but the work shoes in the summer (the have mesh tops to feet stay cool) and boots in the winter. I used to get bad heel pain but ever since I started wearing crocs it’s gone.

GRCP · 13/09/2025 18:15

Patent doc Martin shoes (not boots)

GRCP · 13/09/2025 18:16

I work in a secondary and it’s definitely more formal - we would not be able to wear any kind of sandals or trainers.

JupiterNorth · 13/09/2025 18:27

Primary:

Warm weather - Allbirds Tree Breezers
Cold / wet weather - Chelsea boots
PE days - trainers
