Theatre comfortable but elevated?

I’m going to the local theatre tomorrow to watch a performance. I want to be comfortable but look nice and dress up a touch. I have no idea what to wear! I don’t think I want to wear jeans as I’ll be sitting for longer than I want to and I have a very bad hip. Whatever I wear will be worn with flat boots or trainers or slip on something ballet flat like.

help!

My style icon is probably Claudia winkleman but I don’t own a pair of leather leggings and a fabulous massive black cashmere jumper that cost more than my car, so that might be unachievable.

Size wise I’m also not the waif that she is more towards a 10 than an 8. Not that that matters!

Wide leg trousers ina forgiving jersey, plus a silk shirt and a couple of necklaces?

henlake7 · 12/09/2025 11:23

Last time I went I wore a skater dress, opaque tights and chunky biker boots.
Very comfy outfit and didnt bothered my own dodgy hip!😁

EscapadeVelocity · 12/09/2025 11:48

So what else is in your wardrobe, @FurForksSake - as you presumably won’t be ordering clothes at this stage?

FurForksSake · 12/09/2025 12:07

Cough - erm well I’ve just popped in a little Next order to come tomorrow…

I have a lot of leggings, some wide leg trousers, hoodies… multiple shapes of jeans! I was looking at a leopard print maxi skirt and wondering if I could work out a top half.

ive ordered a kilt 😆😆😆😆😆

I am toying with jeans, white shirt and some sort of cardigan / blazer. But jeans are too uncomfortable. I have m&s jersey black wide leg trousers, but they are pull on so not sure that works with tucked in shirt.

I have ordered some satin shirts.

Why would you have to tuck in your shirt? Wide legged trousers and a shirt sound perfectly fine - you’ll almost certainly want some sort of jacket or outerwear on top.

Do you not go to the theatre often? There’s absolutely no need to dress up - but it seems a shame to have a wardrobe full of garments that don’t suit the things you want to do.

(I like theatre, and eating. I definitely prioritise clothes that won’t restrict my comfortable pursuit of these activities. 😄)

I essentially don’t leave my house and haven’t done more than a handful of times since May. And I’ve just lost 5st7.

id usually go with a nice tidy pair of jeans, some sort of blouse and a jacket or more likely a dress and tights.

but I’ve lived in athleisure wear for so long in a bit lost with what to wear when leaving the house.

I booked tickets before my disabilities became debilitating. It’s all very rubbish, but I’m determined to go even if Sunday I won’t be out of bed.

I’m dressing a body I don’t recognise and that hurts all the time and it’s a bit tricky.

Oh - I see …

D’you know, one of the coolest looks around at the moment is a combination of athleisure with smart. If you have a pair of jogging pants that’s ok to be seen outside in, you could wear them with a shirt and an oversize jacket or calf length coat.

(What are you going to see, by the way?)

Silverbirchleaf · 12/09/2025 14:23

I usually wear a dress, shoes and a jacket, or something I can take off as some theatres can be warm.

However, there’ll be as many people in a ‘jeans and nice top’ combo, as there will be more dressed up.

Also, dress what you feel comfortable in.

However, I do like to dress up a bit when I go to the theatre.

Enjoy!

FurForksSake · 12/09/2025 14:34

@EscapadeVelocitywe are going to see the stage version of the BBC2 show inside number nine with Reece shearsmith and Steve pemberton. I’m hoping it will be enjoyable!

My go to theatre outfit would be comfy black trousers & an All Saints top or a drsss with boots.

FurForksSake · 13/09/2025 18:38

I’m not sure about the cardigan, but it’s what I’ve gone for!

That’s fine. You never know in theatres they can be sweltering or the aircon can kick in & be chilly.

CornishTiger · 13/09/2025 18:44

Fabulous. Have the best time! Hope tomorrow is kind to you too. You deserve this!

EscapadeVelocity · 13/09/2025 19:00

Very stylish! Hope you have a great time.

Silverbirchleaf · 13/09/2025 19:20

Have a lovely evening.

FurForksSake · 13/09/2025 23:40

Thank you! I was glad of the cardigan and I will get a lot of wear out of it. It was a nice evening but very painful, people were very kind helping with doors and giving me space.

Just to entertain you, I have been coveting a very similar cardigan for aeons:

La Fetiche cardigan

FurForksSake · 14/09/2025 10:14

That’s erm… 😆 it started off quite normal!

Wondered what you were talking about then looked at the link, and saw what you mean (and nearly five hundred pounds for a cardigan with holes in! Even half price it’s ridiculous.) (#Goes and unpacks holey cardigan from charity bag)

FurForksSake · 14/09/2025 14:23

I liked the neon elements though, that is pretty cool!

Comefromaway · 14/09/2025 22:16

That’s certainly different.

I guess it’s the same principle as Golden Goose trainers.
