Can you wear 100% polyester?

I just don't think I can but its difficult to find an affordable alternative.
I ordered a dress and a co-ord set recently without checking the details.
I love the pattern and shape of the dress but the fabric is horrible. It reminds me of umbrella fabric.
I have the same issue with the co-ord. The shape is great and looks good on but I hate the shiny feel of it on my skin. I worry it will make me feel sweaty.

I haven’t worn synthetics for a long, long time - at the risk of TMI, they bring me out in a cold sweat and no amount of washing will get the smell out after a few wears. I wear cotton, linen and wool.

I like country / cottagecore styles and can make my own clothes so there’s no problem getting what I need (and maybe quite a lot I don’t need!) - I find its not a cheap way to dress though, even if you go second hand, as good quality pieces in natural fibres hold their value well on the resale sites.

I’m the same - I just can’t wear polyester at all and tend to wear natural fibres. Wore a polyester and cotton blend top this week and I stank by mid morning. I don’t wear deodorant and don’t have any need to with cotton or linen clothes but the polyester in the top I wore caused a terrible smell.

Not hard, shiny polyester but yes, I can wear synthetic mixes now. One of the many joys of being old and post menopausal is the fact that I hardly sweat nowadays.

BadActingParsley · 11/09/2025 06:46

I’ve got a couple of polyester shirts that I only wear on a sedate night out to a restaurant where I know I won’t get sweaty, I couldn’t wear polyester all day at work (and feel really sorry for anyone with a polyester uniform). For me it would be like wearing a polythene bag. I check the material before I buy anything!

I don’t know who is buying the polyester dresses etc in the shops….less sweaty people I assume.

CharlotteRumpling · 11/09/2025 06:48

No. I itch all over.
I only wear cotton, linen and a bit of viscose.
Need to do a ton of ironing though.

LapinR0se · 11/09/2025 06:49

Same as the others. It’s the only fabric that makes me smell.

ishimbob · 11/09/2025 06:53

I don't like the look of 100% polyester so I don't generally wear it but it's absolutely fine for me, I am not a sweaty person.

I hate ironing so almost all my clothes are synthetic blends

I buy cashmere, cotton and linen from charity shops and eBay/Vinted. I can’t afford to buy it new but it’s very easy to pick up second hand. Not only do I feel uncomfortable wearing polyester, I also feel like I look cheap in it.

Some vintage e.g.polyester velvet from St Michael around Christmas and I have a treasured 69s/70s psychedelic shirt from Bernat Klein. Aldo some excellent heavy polyester trousers from Oska that drape beautifully.

It depends on the polyester. Some are rough and scratchy but I've had others that feel like silk.
Viscose is my go to fabric as its made from tree pulp and is better for the environment.

Agree. It depends on the quality. I had a polyester summer dress from H&M once and it floated like silk - it was beautiful fabric. Sadly I’ve not found many since then.

I also tend to stick to viscose - cotton is just to high maintenance for me and linen always looks a crumpled mess on my curvy body.

muddyford · 11/09/2025 07:55

Only as fleece. Everything else is natural fibres, mostly cotton and wool.

JaneJeffer · 11/09/2025 10:24

The worst thing about polyester is the static. I kept getting shocks so I try to avoid it if possible! Also things made from recycled polyester turn to rags as soon as you wash them.

henlake7 · 11/09/2025 10:29

No, I am a sweaty person and cant do polyester at all (Im very careful about checking labels, esp as I tend to shop in alot of cheaper places).
Im not a natural fibre snob though and find viscose is really good, I have a couple of viscose/linen blend things that look like linen but dont crease which are great.

I agree with viscose, easy to wear and non-sweaty - a mix with linen or cotton makes it practically perfect as it cuts out a lot of ironing.

As I've got older I've found I can't wear polyester or synthetics 'like I used to'.

I seem to get sweaty easier (hot flushes!) and the sweat smell is pongier than if I'm wearing cotton or natural materials (despite showering and wearing antiperspirants and perfume).

I'm assuming it's a menopause/change in hormones thing.

Oh, the smell lingers on the garment after washing the garment too - I think this is because you can't really wash synthetics on much over 30 degrees and no amount of appropriate detergent effectively gets them clean.

VikingLady · 11/09/2025 13:30

I think the main purpose of polyester clothes is to ensure social distancing. It is excellent for ensuring no one sits next to you on the bus.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 11/09/2025 13:47

I don't wear polyester any more as a rule, no. I just buy less/no stuff if I can't afford it but I've picked up some fab cotton and linen items on Vinted.

I do have a recycled polyester fleece, and a pair of cotton and poly mix trousers, I think that's it.

Even my workout gear is not polyester - I wear bamboo viscose.

TheDandyLion · 11/09/2025 14:06

Only tech clothing like hiking jackets.

UpMyself · 11/09/2025 14:11

I'm fussy with fabric and tend to wear cotton next to my skin, but I will wear polyester occasionally.
Polyester varies a lot. Some is OK next to the skin and some isn't.
The clue should be in the price of the garment.
Recycled polyester is usually horrible.

If you are unsure, return the clothes.
