Dd is 5'3 and an true hourglass size 12

@SpuytenDuyvil that is exactly what I said so it's weird that you so vehemently disagreed.

Lanva · 10/09/2025 23:09

I feel cross about this! (But I will recover and not have a fight in your thread, OP, no worries!)

I am sorry if I misunderstood what you wrote

Can you post an example of dress appropriate for the occasion for OP’s early 20 dd?

US weddings are much smarter than UK ones

no suggestions though, other than bear this in mind

Really? What a strange generalisation.

mathanxiety · 11/09/2025 03:32

What sort of venue is it, and what does your DD know of the average income of the guests and wedding party?

RitaIncognita · 11/09/2025 04:37

I agree that venue is also an important detail. If it's in a church, that could be an important consideration, including the denomination.

GarlicPint · 11/09/2025 04:51

I think the pink Nobody's Child dress would be perfect - or something like it, obvs. Reasons:

  • It's shiny
  • It's 'styled' (trailing neck ties)
  • Plenty of scope for twinkly jewellery; this is the stand-out feature of American wedding dressing.
Arms full of bracelets will look nice.

She'll need a layer. FGS don't put her in a pashmina or a bolero! A short, boxy jacket in something silky/satiny would be good, I think. You could match or tone the colour, or go mad with a bright green/blue/orange and match the shoes.

Proper shoes, but they don't have to be spindly heels. There are loads of nice strappy flats and wedges, if DD prefers them to pointy kitten heels.

It's in a ranch in the middle of the desert (as far as I am aware). Family are fairly wealthy but very down to earth

The Rixo dress is gorgeous.

Went to a Connecticut wedding this summer, well-off but not super rich people. As some former posters have said, just a bit more groomed, a bit more glossy/satiny than the UK is the vibe. That first pink Nobody's Child dress is absolutely bang on, including the shoes. And absolutely NO hats or fascinators, essential you go to the hairdressers on the day and get a really good blow-dry instead.

TitsInAbsentia · 11/09/2025 20:16

I love this! Putting it on my vinted watch list 😂

Agree.

And classy make up - no pouty lips, permanent marker eyebrows, long, decorated nails, etc.

The Calvin Klein / Carolyn Bessette Kennedy look always goes down well.

Hugely disagree with this (from US, lived UK through the period all our friends were getting married). This really depends on where in the US and the people involved. Arizona could go either way. But there are generally not hats etc and honestly seen a lot of atrociously casual wear at weddings here that I have never seen in the UK.

Gatekeeper · 20/10/2025 16:34

A little update but not a nice one

Dd got her dress...very similar to the Nobody's child posted..shoes, bag, new earrings etc etc and the bloody airport has lost her luggage en route 😥. She is so upset and I am on her behalf.
Buggeration

At this stage it will probably be the clothes she travelled in. They are all so much taller than her. Bloody airline

mathanxiety · 21/10/2025 02:33

What awful luck!

How much time does she have? She might be able to shop for something suitable right there.

Gatekeeper · 24/10/2025 17:26

HURRAY... bag finally delivered 3 a.m our time this morning courtesy of Delta. I say courtesy as they have been particularly unhelpful and its taken almost a week to get to her. Wedding is tomorrow so am just thankful it has arrived in time.
Relief...
