Graduation dress

My DD loves this dress and wants it for her graduation. I think it’s a bit expensive for what it is so wondering if anyone else has some other suggestions.

She is a petite size 4 and 5ft 2inches so likes the tie up back as she struggles to find dresses to fit.

She wants all white and if possible I would prefer under £100.

How about putting the details into google and then you can check out prices ,where the dress is stocked etc ?

Call me old fashioned but that would be an extremely strange choice for a graduation ceremony. (Unless for some specialist institution where long white dresses are the norm?) Presumably your DD is not at one of those universities with a strict dress code?

A graduation is a serious (but joyful) academic ceremony. A white dress would be quite odd anyway - but a long, sleeveless white dress of that particular cut is unlike anything I’ve seen across the handful of my own or other family members’ graduation ceremonies I’ve attended.

Did you mean a school graduation (or prom, as we’re now supposed to call them)?

It'll be covered by a voluminous black robe, if uni?
It's alot of money.

LoafofSellotape · 08/09/2025 13:08

I agree with it being an odd choice for graduation.

Strange choice to want white
My dd wore a long black dress. It gets covered by the gown anyway

UpMyself · 08/09/2025 14:24

The dress is unsuitable.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/09/2025 14:59

I agree with others. No one at the recent graduations I have been to, or seen photos from, has worn anything like that. All dresses and skirts have been mid-calf length or shorter.

mamagogo1 · 08/09/2025 15:08

How much will alterations be on top!

I wouldn’t recommend maxi length unless above the ankles as there’s usually steps to climb plus often receptions are on grass (varies by institution). They will have the robe covering most the dress anyway so no point in having a fancy back. Some hoods need a button or safety pins to hold at the front, worth checking with the institution if it is that design. I honestly wouldn’t spend that amount for graduation

I feel it’s not worth commenting again until @Champagnecharleyismyname has clarified regarding the actual type of ‘graduation’!

Champagnecharleyismyname · 08/09/2025 15:27

I completely agree with all the comments. She’s graduating from Imperial so the ceremony is at the Royal Albert Hall. We have had the discussion (argument) about what is suitable but she is adamant she wants a white dress. It doesn’t have to be long.

She has shown me quite a few photos where women wear these sorts of dresses in one colour, quite often white. A lot also wear national dress which looks amazing.

Anyway whether I agree it’s suitable or not, that’s what she wants. She’s unlikely to wear it again so I would prefer not to spend too much on it.

Our dress code included white dresses, black dresses and a black skirt and white blouse, so a white dress is not out of line. I don’t think a long dress will look good with a gown over it. It’s a lot to pay for something that won’t really be seen once she has a hood and gown over it.
