How to stop washing hair every day

I’m 36 this year and have pretty much washed my hair every day since I can remember. It’s mid length and not super thick, I usually wash it in the shower each morning as it gets oily and I find it easier to style from scratch.

Ive noticed it is thinning and I have small SCs, I often think how much extra time I would have if I didn’t wash my hair each day! But each morning I say I’m not going to wash it, my hair feels oily and messy so I give in.

Is it actually possible to stop washing hair every day? How do you do it? How do you stop it smelling/looking oily/being hard to manage?

Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo before you go to bed in the evening.

i wash mine every day too. Dry shampoo gives me an extra day.

You need to stop as the more you wash it the more you get oily.

tie your hair back and leave it for a few days.
dont put so much product on it

Cut out products with silicone in. They're fine on the first day and make your hair look shiny, but the next day it feels greasy and limp.

Use this shampoo bar and a lightweight, silicone free conditioner. My hair and skin are oily but I can wash my hair every other day and probably could push it to three days if I use this shampoo and make sure my conditioner isn't too heavy for my hair.

Also make sure you're washing absolutely every bit of product out of your hair.

Oh and use a sulfate-free shampoo and a scalp scrubber

If you can leave it as long as possible inbetween washes, itll stop it getting oily. Mine was like this, so i went a week without washing it (when dc were off school sick) - and problem was solved can go 2/3 days without greasy hair now!

Silvertulips · 07/09/2025 21:27

I used silicone and sulphate free products.

I wash my hair in Sundays. I could probably go longer - never tried!

I’m the same, OP. I’ve just had to accept that washing it daily is the only way I’m going to feel happy as I hate the feeling of dirty hair. I just can’t do it. I never wear my hair up, so tying it up isn’t an option for me (as per a previous suggestion…I’d love to, but I just look dreadful with it scraped back).

I take biotin, collagen and eat a high protein diet and I think it’s really helped with my hair quantity.

Bedtime: a little baby powder (what used to be talc) at the roots / at the front / where it gets most greasy

Morning: a little more talc, dry shampoo, blast with hairdryer

Always check the back! I have thin hair and it gets flattened when I sleep on it so you can sometimes see the scalp and it looks like a bald patch 😭 brush, blast with dryer, backcombe to get rid of it.

Once all this is done I actually prefer how my hair looks compared with just washed as it has more volume and texture

I wash my hair 2-3 times a week

People always say this but it doesn't help me. I don't use any products. I "trained" my hair to wash it every second day for about 10 years but honestly I hate my second day hair. It looks and feels not as nice. I think I'm going to just give up and go back to washing it every day. I think perimenopause is making mine worse. Agree with PP that the only thing is dry shampoo.

I use batiste dry shampoo before bed the night before I then have to tie it up because for some reason my hair feels oiler if I leave it down. Then in the morning I just use my straighteners to straighten the bobble line out

Nellietheelephont · 07/09/2025 21:36

I don’t really use any product in it as anything I put on instantly makes it look oily. I’ve suffered with scalp psoriasis in the past which made it even oilier but this seems to have sorted itself out since I’ve been pregnant!

I’m another one where just stopping washing doesn’t help. There’s a big difference between my Day 1/2/3. Things that have helped:

Head and Shoulders for oily hair (clear shampoos are best)
Bleaching or dyeing your hair (dries it out)
Getting older
Living Proof Dry Shampoo
