Afternoon tea at The Ivy, what would you wear?

I think smart casual is the order of the day, but apparently no trainers or denim.

Any ideas?

I'd probably wear a nice day dress, nothing fancy the Ivy is pretty much just a chain restaurant now.
If you're unsure you can take a look at people who've tagged themselves there on Instagram to see what others wear.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 07/09/2025 18:47

Anything that isn't those two. I take it joggers and sliders would also be out?

dynamiccactus · 07/09/2025 19:01

Jeans are absolutely fine, it's not a posh place!

GloryFades · 07/09/2025 19:03

Who says no jeans? I’m almost certain I’ve worn jeans to the ivy before.

But assuming that is the rule, I’ve got some light weight trousers I’d wear with a white tee shirt, or if it was a bit colder maybe some thicker twill black Lucy and yak trousers I have.

SleepLuxury · 07/09/2025 19:03

The Ivy is not posh or strict any more, esp the chains. Wear what you love!

AnnaMagnani · 07/09/2025 19:07

Which Ivy?

The original you can basically wear what you want.

Some of the ones in different towns are very smart. However you can still absolutely wear jeans if that is more you.

mazedasamarchhare · 07/09/2025 19:14

Eh? I had lunch at the ivy and wore jeans and trainers, maybe in the evenings there is a dress code, but not aware of one during the day. It was a complete mix, some people were in business attire, some looked like they had been to or going to a formal event, others were just in comfortable everyday wear.

Imagineallthepuppies · 07/09/2025 19:18

Where whatever you want to wear. I dress up to go out regardless of where it is because I don’t get a chance very often.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/09/2025 19:22

Is it The Ivy or one of The Ivy chain restaurants?

doubleshotcappuccino · 07/09/2025 19:49

You could but I wouldn’t wear jeans because I like to dress up when I can which isn’t often - I wore a nice day dress

Covent Garden. I know it's not 'posh', I won't be wearing a ballgown. 😂 I do like to make an effort though. Thanks anyway.

Dress for the occasion rather that the restaurant. Enjoy!

alittlequinnie · 07/09/2025 20:09

I took my husband to The Ivy in Birmingham for his lunch on his birthday. I thought it was quite dressy.

If it helps I wore a really nice navy knitted dress that had a v neck cardigan type top and a pleated skirt with a self tie belt. I also wore navy heels. I felt like I fitted with the vibe really well. It was December when I went... but I would wear a dress if I went again - but I live in dresses and heels in any event. I didn't see anybody in jeans though.

Catsinaflat · 07/09/2025 20:11

I’ve never not worn trainers there. I’ve never been for afternoon tea though only brunch or dinner…

tobee · 07/09/2025 20:26

Afternoon tea? I'd wear something roomy 😉

troppibambini6 · 07/09/2025 20:31

Convent garden one definitely not dressy in the day just wear what you want. I went in jeans and trainers

mamagogo1 · 07/09/2025 20:33

Are you sure it’s Covent Garden, they do not do afternoon tea, or rather didn’t a few weeks ago because I asked

Definitely Covent Garden but my friend booked it and I thought we were having afternoon tea because that's what we said we'd do. She could only get 5pm though so perhaps not?

Dress for disappointment. THE Ivy is the worst restaurant and let down. Of 6 meals, 5 were returned as so badly prepared. Rates just behind the Oxo Tower for shitness.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/09/2025 23:49

We went to the one near Victoria early evening in extremely casual clothing which we had worn to travel in and had only intended to pop out for a drink and to get some food from Waitrose. There were definitely people there a lot smarter than us, but others were casual too. I would have dressed better had I gone with the intention of eating there.

ILoveWhales · 07/09/2025 23:51

I would wear clothes that aren't denim or trainers.

Renamed · 07/09/2025 23:52

A tea gown?
