Outfits with navy blue wax jacket?

Going to invest in a wax jacket after my Barbour finally croaked it. Looking at a Barbour again, country style jacket along the lines of the barn jacket trend. (Hoping I can wear it in that way whilst investing in a longer term item). I am thinking of choosing navy blue since having my colours done and realising muddy green drains me. I can’t do the brown trend either so navy and greys are my neutrals.

But I’m trying to work out if I’d be able to use a navy jacket as a neutral when planning casual outfits in the same way I would with a muddy / olive green. Can anyone suggest?

eg I have some navy blue adidas I wear a lot but would navy trainers and navy jacket look too much? What about with jeans - would it be too much blue? What items would work together? Im a winter btw so contrasts are good.

TLDR: should I invest in a navy jacket?

My Barbour waxed jacket is Navy, and I tend to wear mine with jeans and knee high brown suede boots. I find navy a good all round colour, the only colour I don't tend to wear with it is black.

Thanks, yes brown would work. I only wear brown on my feet though as it doesn’t suit me otherwise.

I wear my navy Barbour jacket with either red or mustard-ish jeans and brown Chelsea boots. I think they look nice together (but other people may think I got dressed in the dark!)

I've just bought a new wax jacket. I've gone for olive. Unfortunately I don't rate new barbour. I've bought 3/4 in the last 10 years and they've fallen apart but my old 30 year old one is ok.
I bought one from new forest.

I’m vert much not a person who wears green/brown and i do wear a lot of navy. However, DM bought me a Barbour for my 50th birthday, and I chose olive green as it’s a much easier neutral for my wardrobe. I didn’t want to be head-to-toe “double navy”, which would have been highly likely. I wear my Barbour with pretty much everything from pretty much October to April, and wear a “my colour” scarf with it.

What happened to the brand? I haven’t bought anything new from them in a while, my jacket is still going strong after 6 years of wear, but I keep hearing more and more complaints about their quality!

ooh yes, this is making me think. I want to avoid head to toe dark blue as well. Perhaps Olive would be better even though the colour doesn’t work with my skin tone. I wish they did a pine green.

Some of the waxed jackets come in a Fern colourway: https://www.barbour.com/gb/luella-waxed-jacket-LWX1483OL52.html

Oh that’s a nicer green for my colouring!

I recently inherited a couple of Barbours, they are very lightweight compared to my 40 yr old ones. To be honest I see them as functional and not fashionable. They fall under dog walking clothing. I have a Schoffell jacket I bought last year which is warm, waterproof and far more stylish than a waxed jacket. It is a proofed fabric rather than wax so looks much smarter than a Barbour.
I’m a rural Mumsnetter so Barbour are usually tatty, muddy work gear, an absolute must for watching your son playing rugby. I hate anything padded and found that a cashmere jumper under my Barbour ( vintage) was much warmer than a big puffa coat.

minecraftmind · 06/09/2025 14:03

Ah that’s where we differ. I’m a city dwelling Mumsnetter and in my part of London country jackets are very much a style item rather than purely for dog walking (if at all)!

Do the waxy ones make your hair smell? I have long hair that I wear down and wonder if my hair and clothes would smell like the wax jacket.
