Winter wedding guest how to stay warm?

I have a wedding to attend in December. I've never actually been to a winter wedding so don't have anything which will keep me warm! Cardigan doesn't seem smart enough and a wrap/scarf too chilly ( a wrap being my normal go to for weddings).

It's at a hotel but ceremony in the conservatory so likely to be on the chillier side.

I already have a few dresses which I own was thinking one of my teal ones I have a floor length maxi and a just below knee teal with black lace Overtop option.

Any ideas which dont break the bank and likelyto use again? I don't really want to just wear my work coat!

I'd treat myself to a big wooly scarf to co ordinate with the outfit, but which I'd wear afterwards, just in case, but I don't think a hotel conservatory full of people will be chilly.

Warm underwear! I invested in some spanx type shorts (cheap h&m version) and they keep me so much warmer than just pants & thin tights would. Thermal vest too. Basically whatever you can hide under your dress.

If you have any smart boots then wear those rather than shoes, again much warmer and can add warm socks underneath.

I wouldn’t worry, OP. The venue won’t have it set to be cold and there will be plenty of people around to add to the warmth!

For indoors, I wouldn’t be considering any extra layers just because it’s a winter wedding.

The hotel won’t be chilly, it will have heating as they won’t want cold guests. I’d go with your usual wrap, if you are travelling there I’d wear a coat for the journey (or a blanket if not driving) and then just have a wrap for ceremony

Pashmina but when we married in December the only time I was cold was outside taking photos - inside the venue was lovely and warm

MadameBethune · 03/09/2025 21:54

a little fun fur jacket?

BendingSpoons · 03/09/2025 21:56

I went to a December wedding and was boiling! I wore a cardigan/jacket thing I already had and knee high boots and was way too warm. It was all in one venue so no standing around outside.

Yes true about being warm indoors. The freezing weddings are the April ones where it isn’t really warm enough to be outside but they are insisting on outdoor drinks 🥶

We were at a winter wedding recently. Snow outside, toasty inside. Despite being an old country house type venue. There were lots of cardis and wraps and talk of ‘this wasn’t the outfit I planned’! Outdoor photos were done in shifts so no standing around in the cold except for the bride and groom.
In fact we were at another snowy wedding years ago and that was city centre based with no parking so lots of glam outfits with wellies!

Op you'll be fine, just wear what you have planned.

Just one more thing on the lighthearted side - have you packed your picnic basket just in case you're starving before the meal? That seems to be an obsession with many wedding goers on here, the FEAR of hunger in betweeny lol 😊

Haha not a picnic basket but I do always have snacks with me due to young DCs along with emergency mini packets of haribo should they need a bribe!

OMG this is so true. I had 2 in April last year - one in North Norfolk one in Sussex…….i bought a new coat - both outdoors ceremonies. Freezing! Most people didn’t bring coats. 2 or 3 ended up with dog blankets from their car draped around their shoulders.

protect yourself OP!

I wore grey cashmere trousers and a skyblue peacoat, with a smart polo-neck underneath.
