Bar soap that lathers?

greengreyblue · 02/09/2025 16:57

I switched back to bar soap for the shower and hand basins some years ago and normally use Dove. Recently used a Spanish soap I bought on holiday but then returned to Dove and it just doesn’t lather like it used to. Any good recommendations?

Anything by L'Occitane, especially the Shea ones. They smell lovely and although they're a bit expensive, they last for ages.

Another recommendation for anything by L’Occitane. Not the cheapest but do last. Think they are around £12 for a large bar.

Theolittle · 02/09/2025 23:47

I use different soaps but put them in a little mesh soap on a rope bag that helps the lather

BrendaSmall · 03/09/2025 07:14

My husband will only use soap and I buy what ever is on offer on Amazon!
usually it’s either Lux, Palmolive or shield and I bulk buy

Caspianberg · 03/09/2025 07:15

Locctaine. The big bars last ages and don’t dry skin. I like the Shea range

I'm currently using Tesco Extracts Lemon & Mandarin Soap 4X125g - Tesco Groceries (£1.45) having seen it recommended by MNers.
It hasn't gone mushy.
I'm another who buys marseille soap in TK Maxx.
I can't use handwash but I buy liquid soap in TK Maxx for use in the kitchen. If you buy it, check the ingredients as some say soap but it's actually handwash.

I use Pears soap, as it reminds me of my Grandma. Lovely soap..

Definitely. I use the green one, lemongrass I think it is, rather than the traditional transparent orange one. They also do a lovely fresh minty one that's blue.

Shield… I use it for the nostalgia

I have this on the go in the house at the moment and also shower with it. Builds a lovely lather.

ObtuseMoose · 03/09/2025 07:37

Faith in Nature soaps are lovely. If you're anywhere near a Polish supermarket have a look at their toiletries I've had some really nice soaps.

borntobequiet · 03/09/2025 07:46

Dove is a detergent bar not actual soap. (Ditto Pears, though I believe the Indian version is or was made to the original recipe.)

Simple or any brand listing sodium palmate or tallowate is “bar soap”. Anything listing sulphates is a detergent (broadly speaking).

onyourway · 03/09/2025 08:29

You can get those French soaps delivered in the UK, gorgeous range of scents and colours.

UpMyself · 03/09/2025 08:36

@borntobequiet , I agree. Didn't mention Pears because I couldn't be bothered to check. It's definitely not the Pears Soap from my childhood.

@sciaticafanatica , I think Shield is one that hasn't had the formulation changed. A lot of them have.

I use an African net with soap and it helps it lather well. I like dettol soap but can’t use it too much or it dries my skin out.

cannaethink · 03/09/2025 16:37

Another vote for the tkmaxx soaps!

Memorable · 03/09/2025 16:44

TKMaxx for me too. The big bars last a good while and they feel like a little luxury. Hard water here but they lather and rinse away perfectly.

Azuresky68 · 06/09/2025 19:50

Any ideas for shampoo/conditioner bars that are moisturising and not a crazy price please?

UpMyself · 06/09/2025 20:05

Shop in £1 shops like One Below or Sam's.
Or look for special offers in H&B.

WingBingo · 06/09/2025 20:07

I love proper bar soap (which Dove isn’t, as per PP)

Triple milled bars last ages. I really enjoy anything with lavender.

I like olive oil soap for the shower. For handwashing I just buy Lidl soda - 4 bars for a quid or something’s lathers really well and hands feel properly clean afterwards.

I never feel clean with shower gel.

Yep, another lidl soap user here.

I am in a soft water area so stopping it melting is my biggest problem :)

Lathers lovely ( for me )

Knight's Castile bar soap
Camay
Palmolive
Imperial Leather
Wright's Coal Tar
Lifebuoy

igiveuptrying · 06/09/2025 20:40

Nesti Dante do good soap

mdinbc · 06/09/2025 21:04

Another L'Occitane fan here. Their verbena soap is my go-to for fresh scent and good lather; it also lasts a long time.

Typicalwave · 06/09/2025 21:16

Wrights coal tar soap

user1476613140 · 07/09/2025 02:18

Just ordered from The Highland Soap Company and will report back about it when I get using their bars...

greengreyblue · 07/09/2025 07:51

Happy to see so many bar soap users. I always feel much cleaner than when I use gels and they last ages. Have bought some imperial leather which is soooo nice and nostalgic. I love sandalwood anyway.. Will look out in TK Max too.
