Defunct/forgotten brands to buy secondhand

flaks · 02/09/2025 13:05

Most of my clothes and bags are thrifted and I recently discovered vinted. I wonder if there are brands that are particularly high quality that I am missing out on because I don't know what I am looking for. In particular I was thinking of brands that are gone (UK or abroad) that may not have been on my radar. I used to find obscure brands in charity shops but for online it would be nice to know to what search for.

I bought some lovely hair accessories for weddings from Cherry Chau in Selfridges

I still have some hair clips from there. I used to find Selfridges so much more accessible and fun. I found things changed when they made the third floor I think all about ‘body’ and fitness. The whole atmosphere and product lines seemed to change. It became a bit more ‘blingy’ too.

DD20 and all her mates buy Jane Norman tops from Vinted to wear with their baggy jeans

Young women dress like crap now- low-cut, baggy jeans or combat trousers, clunky trainers and crop tops everywhere!

That's no different to what I wore as a teenager in the 90s (minus the chunky trainers I was more a Converse/Vans(but not canvas vans, they were suede) girl).

That's just late 90s/early 00s fashion though and it's come back around. What you have just described is All Saints on Top of the Pops c.1998!

@TubeP was it Jeffrey Rogers?

I don’t think so. Maybe I’m going mad! But it was next to the Morgan in the plaza on Oxford Street…

Jeffrey Rogers ?

CalzoneOnLegs · 09/09/2025 15:21

flaks · 09/09/2025 15:25

You mean like the '90s 😂 And the '70s, for that matter!

Fabulous thread OP, such wonderful memories. I used to love Principles, Next and Wallis for workwear and going out stuff. Designers at Debenhams was great, Faith and Nine West shoes, I could go on.

I've got a wonderful dark Brown fake fur coat from C&A that I got in our local charity shop. It's got to be from the 80's/90's and it's great quality.

I too miss Pepperberry, it's the only place I have ever bought clothes from that reliably will fit me.

Joyce Ridings used to make wonderful clothes, but they come up small if buying on Vinted. Also a shout for Betty Jackson, who did collaborate with Designers at Debenhams. Georgina von Etzdorf for marvellous velvet stoles and occasional clothing.

I’ve managed to pick up a few Joyce Ridings linen tops (and a fabulous waistcoat - looks much better than it sounds) on Vinted and the quality of the linen is just outstanding.

I miss Jaeger. They had a couple of incredible years when the cut of their clothes was wonderful. It might not look like anything special on the hanger but once you put it on, just wow! I used to go to the Jaeger outlet at Braintree (such lovely ladies who worked there too) and stock up for work clothes. I was commuting to Paris a lot for work and even my Parisian colleagues were impressed with my work wardrobe. Actually I picked up a few nice pieces from Aquascutum too (also at the Braintree outlet). That was another great brand that is sadly lost although I have a fairly extensive collection of Aquascutum macs in my wardrobe.

The 60s was all cropped tops and capri pants …. if I am remembering my Elvis and Cliff Richard’s films correctly. I think the All Saints look is free-ing and sexy. Trainers are great for dancing all night rather than the hideous stilettos that I wore in the 80s and am paying the price for now with my deformed bunion feet!

Such a shame they stopped doing clothes, but when they started repeating the same jersey tops and dresses and stopped their more tailored stuff it was only a matter of time. Quality also declined.

Was great to actually have tailored clothes that fitted. Their recommendations for shops that sell clothes that may fit now are all quite frumpy.

Enjoyed the Jeffey Rogers catch-up!

By 1994, there were 39 stores and the company was planning expansion into mainland Europe.[5]
The company went into administration in 2001, by which stage it traded as both the Jeffrey Rogers and Rogers + Rogers brands and had some 600 employees and over 50 stores, including three overseas franchises. Inventory problems and high retail rental prices were cited as the causes of its difficulties. Rogers was the main shareholder.[6][7] By 2002 Jeffrey Rogers the brand was part of the Matalan stable.[8]
Jeffrey Rogers has continued to work in fashion design, establishing the Jeffrey & Paula label with his wife and working with retail operations such as Simply Be.[1][9]

Pepperberry were often quite frumpy too and I also did not particularly rate the jersey stuff. But yeah I have a few tailored dresses for work in plains or less garish prints that are amazing and make my figure look incredible and my waist look tiny. I wish maybe they had stuck to classics and then a few more young/fun styles.

I had an interview this morning, I wore one of their dresses and instantly felt put together as it fitted. Whenever I put one of their items on, whether it's a dress or a top, I instantly feel good. My winter coat is from them and it fits perfectly and I look and feel so smart in it. I don't have to size up to accommodate my boobs, meaning the rest is too big or have something that fits everywhere else other than my boobs.

I've pestered them so much about bringing back their clothes, even just a capsule collection of shirts and dresses and maybe a classic winter coat. I had their very first white shirt. They just aren't interested sadly.

I really really miss Nicole Farhi which was so much of my work wardrobe in the 1990s and early 2000s. Loved her knitwear and suiting.

Also DKNY at that time was excellent quality.

So was Emporio Armani

Viyella shirts

Some old Jaeger stuff was great

GrimDamnFanjo · 12/09/2025 00:53

I’m slowly picking up some older Jaegar, St Michael etc. it’s becoming an interesting hobby.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 12/09/2025 06:47

Inspired by this thread I just bought some wool trousers from the Hobbs NW3 brand from Vinted. £6 and they are perfect!

Wow that’s a bargain. It’s also wonderful to wear high quality clothes. For me I think I need them as scaffolding as my body ages - also saving the planet and the cuts / silhouette are classic and never dated. Even the colours are neutral and classy.

Doggymummar · 12/09/2025 08:20

I bought a number of pieces this week. I mostly shop to resell, but when I find something magical I keep it. I have some Planet wool trousers on the way in chocolate brown, and yesterday I got a Sezane jacket with big shoulders and a Jaeger biker jacket. I did have a monsoon tapestry coat for Winter but I am too small for it now and have a beautiful old Wallis one in Burgundy. I love Autumn so much.

flaks · 12/09/2025 18:51

@Leteveryoneseeit I agree on the need for better fabrics and I need to educate myself on more substantial materials. I look droopy in thin jersey.
