Anybody a hairdresser?? Why can I not persuade a hairdresser to do this......

To thin my hair out from underneath. So that from the top it just looks like shoulder length all one length hair.

I have the thickest, thickest, thickest hiar. It is awful . I cna do nothing with it. I dont wnat layers because that will make it go all kinky and a bit curly but not even properly curly. Just weird and sticky out.

I would like to buy one of those hairdressers 'thinning' scissors and do it myself, even though that is a big no no.

I've now asked three HDs about this and they look at me as though I had asked to have my hair cut into the shape of a cockerel.

Sheherezade, ha ha! I wish I knew you in rl so that I could feel like I had normal hair for once!

DSM, I know I will sound like a lazy sod, but since having children I can't face spenidng time on my hair. It's not on principle or anything, I literally feel depression like a tsunami coming over me when I start to dry my hair because I know it will take so, so long. If I had to finish off with straighteners too! Arhghghg... I'd go mad.

I am getting a bit too old for hair in a pony tail. Well, maybe not quite yet, but that day is out there. I have to sort my hair out before that day comes.

I would happily donate some hair to a bald man. If the procedure was easy and I could go to hospital and read magazines.

Another freakily thick-haired person here and I agree re: layers being the only answer, otherwise it's the mushroom/triangle effect is inevitable. It's a pisser, isn't it?

southeastastra · 31/05/2008 22:21

it's called an undercut isn't it

drinkmoretea · 31/05/2008 22:28

soory, no name but will ask next time i go in, he is a very experienced hairdresser so would definately trust what he say...

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 31/05/2008 22:34

hhhmmm interested in the lulu style, amd going to google now..
mine is long and curly, to my shoulders. I find the longer it gets the better curl it does. Like a spiral. If its short then it just does one loop, and in the past i have looked like i am wearing a motorbike helmet! I kid you not!
Over the last few weeks on look good naked have been 2 really nice curly hair do's on the cat walk, a short one that kicked out at the bottom, and then another that was in a bob, and seemed long on the top, and short underneath..

shybaby · 31/05/2008 22:40

I have hair so thick that at my old hairdressers (very funky modern place), whoever was doing my hair would call the other staff to marvel at it!

They did a decent job. Its long and layered, I have no choice but to have it layered. Recently ive been going to a cheaper salon and the young girl there does a fantastic job, out come the thinning scissors, pile of hair on the floor and there you go. My hair is naturally curly so I still need to use the straighteners but ghds are brilliant, they only take about 15 mins.

I too get that horrible triangle thing when I leave it for a while.

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 31/05/2008 22:42

I've had mine straightened just once and it looked just horrendous! The kids cried and ran upstairs! My head looked like a pea!

DirtySexyMummy · 31/05/2008 22:48

GreenElizabeth - if you really can't face blow-drying your hair, then fine, let it dry naturally and run straighteners over it after. With a good pair, like GHD's, it will literally take you one, maybe 2 minutes at most to do your whole hair.

Have you ever tried blow-drying your hair upside down? It is much faster.

DirtySexyMummy · 31/05/2008 22:50

15 minutes straightening with GHD's?

You are going to ruin your hair. You will be burning it.

Molesworth · 31/05/2008 22:54

Blow drying upside down makes it even bigger though

DirtySexyMummy · 31/05/2008 22:56

Er, yeah and then you straighten it!

Also, if you blow dry it upside own to 90% dry, and do the other 10% normally, it flattens a lot. Then straighten, and you'll be fine.

GreenElizabeth · 31/05/2008 23:02

I do make the effort if I'm going out, though, I straighten it with hairdrier for one hour and put serum in to smooth it. It is ok but not as straight as a hairdresser would do it. Have straighteners and I use v.v occassionally.

I've always thought lulu had lovely hair, marrid to a hairdresser I think! good plan!
her hair is thinner and straighter than mine though.

I'm thinking of going curly. Just going with it. having layers and being curly. Is curly hair acceptable agian? Iknow for about 20 yrs you were only allowed to have straight hair. Anything else just looked wrong.

DirtySexyMummy · 31/05/2008 23:06

You sound like you are making it worse, blow druing it for an hour will be overheating your hair, drying it out, and making it worse. 20 mins, maximum.

What kind of straighteners do you have/

Curly hair is definitely acceptable, not sure when it wasn't TBH! But yes, go curly, but do it well (no poodle perms )

GreenElizabeth · 31/05/2008 23:06

DSM, I did that in the late 80s and it was a good look then, but I think I would look like I'd been tothe science museum and put my hand on one of those staticky orbs if i blew dried my hair upside down!

The last thing I want to do with my hair is put any more life into it.

OP posts:
DirtySexyMummy · 31/05/2008 23:06

Honestly, if you straighten it afterwards, then it makes no difference how you dry it.

GreenElizabeth · 31/05/2008 23:10

20 minutes of blowdrying wouldn't dry my hair though!

It might almost dry it if I had had it wrapped in a towel turban thing for half an hour first though.

I know I'm sounding really negative. I have ghd straighteners, but they have dust on the box because if it takes me twice as long as a normal person to dry my hair, it also takes twice as long to straightem them.

I have done it, or my friedn has doen it and it did look great, like cheryl llladds but LIFE IS TOO SHORT unfortunately!

OK I have two options now. I am going to look at magazines for pics of curly hair and I'm going to go another hairdresser to talk about an 'undercut'. I still think it would be the lesser of two evils with my hair!

OP posts:
DirtySexyMummy · 31/05/2008 23:14

Please don't do the undercut. Honestly, you will look ridiculous. Imagine when it is windy outside.

Life is not too short for straightening. Once you get the hang of GHD's, it will take a few minutes at most. I promise!

If you wash your hair, leave it in the towel turban for an hour or so, it will only take about 15/20 mins for really thick hair to be blow dried. This will help your hair out, as it will ultimately help your hair retain moisture as you will not be drying it out so badly, and over time this will make it less frizzy.

What shampoo do you use?

Springflower · 31/05/2008 23:39

My hair is really thick and wavy too and takes ages to blow dry and straighten, but I find if I straighten it it lasts 2 or 3 days and so saves me time in the long run. I also wash my hair in the early evening and let it dry naturally and then straighten it before I go to bed and then it means I spend the minimum time doing it. Only thick haired folk understand what a night mare having hair like this is! And mine's grey too (well, it would be if I didnt spend the rest of my time getting it coloured)

Molesworth · 01/06/2008 00:39

I always leave mine in a towel turban for an hour or so before putting a hairdryer near it, otherwise it looks like a tumbleweed landed on my head. Mind you, it looks like that at the best of times.

It's even worse now that I'm going grey (I dye it but I reckon it's about 30% grey now). It's like a bloody brillo pad.

You have my sympathy, thick-haired sisters

widgypog · 01/06/2008 18:10

I have got very thick curly hair but it is straight ish on the underneath layer and I asked my hairdresser to thin this bit only and she said she can't ..I am not sure why but no anyway. I have it thinned all over and she kinda cuts into it. can you ask them to do this?

widgypog · 01/06/2008 18:11

I think you can actually have something called and undercut where they shave the bit closest to your head but of course then you cant wear it up..well you can but you look lke a punk!!

squeaver · 01/06/2008 18:17

GE - have just read this thread and my advice to you is, honestly, spend the most you can afford on a really good hairdresser. Not Toni & Guy shite but - if you're in London - somewhere like Charles Worthington.

If they're top notch you can go in for a consultation then back for the actual cut. They will not muck you about and will give you an HONEST opinion on what to do for the best. And if you get a good cut you won't have to go back for ages or you can get a cheaper hairdresser to copy what they've done.

In my opinion (and experience) getting a decent hairdresser is like the getting a professional to plaster your walls or service your car. They know better than you do.

And the undercut thing just sounds bizarre.

Thanks Squeaver and everybody else.

I've had layers millions of times before and it is always very difficult to take the volume out of my hair. it's not just curly it is just so ludicrously voluminous. It's hard to explain.

I am going to go up to a woman I know with thick curly hair and ask her who cuts it... It looks like it has a good shape to it.

There was an advert in the sunday mirror mag (for next i think) with a model having short hair underneath, and long on the top, and it was very much a triangle....!
but is that what TenaciousG means?
