Hi, I work in medical outpatients and have been in scrubs since 2020. We are now being demobbed into office wear. I have no idea what to wear on my feet. I used to (I think) wear ballet flat but that seems passe. I also hate the feel of the thin sole. I am not wearing heels. Clothes wise I have gained a fair bit of weight so gone for midi dresses and some plain wide legged trousers. I got through the summer by breaking dress code and wearing saltwater sandals but no idea what to wear all winter. I am getting on for 50 and a lot of styles seem a bit old lady which is not what I want!

Smartish trainers?

MeganM3 · 02/09/2025 08:57

Smart, clean trainers. Used only for work.

Loooop · 02/09/2025 09:01

What kind of trainers? I’ve spent years in trainers for work but none look smart enough with a dress. And then in the winter am I looking at tights and trainers?

A smart pair of loafers? You can get some with thicker soles and memory foam insoles.

Down to personal preference, something smart enough, clean and comfy. I’m wearing these today, with dark jeans and a fitted shirt. Feels reasonably smart. The trainers are comfy and have a slightly cushioned sole. In winter I’ll swap to Chelsea or knee high boots.

Would boots work the style of your dresses? Flat long boots would be comfortable and weather appropriate and the right pair can also look work appropriate.

I have a pair of flat knee length boots. I think good when it gets colder but not for autumn or spring if you know what I mean

I wear my DMs during the bad weather and vans trainers most of the time.
I do also have loafers which I hate which I save for days with more formal meetings and a pair of ankle boots. In the summer I proper struggled cos we need to have closed toe shoes and my feet were way too hot

DoubtfulCat · 02/09/2025 20:40

My work is similarly semi-casual. Most people wear trainers. My manager has a pair of leather, wooden-soled clogs that she wears to meetings sometimes. We all seem to be about the comfort! Around the place today I saw New Balance, Adidas, and Nikes all with office type clothes, dresses, trousers both wide and narrow, and jumpsuits.

I’m stalking a pair of Birkenstock closed shoes for when I am feeling a bit flusher, wearing trainers in the meantime. I’ve got leather ankle boots (Blundstone style) which I wear when it’s colder and on wet days- although the shoes I’m planning to get are for mild wet days, I hate having wet feet but shoes are better than boots if it’s not too cold.

loveawineloveacrisp · 02/09/2025 20:46

Are chunky loafers still in? I have unworn ones from last year.

Loooop · 03/09/2025 00:18

Short boots a good call. All the youth in my office wear the closed toe Birkenstock with an ankle sock. Not for me.

Bought these can a pair of black leather trainers. Hopefully that’s me sorted. Thanks for all the ideas

Coloured trainers. Yes wear with tights.

Flat ankle boots/Chelsea boots.

I'm wearing loafers or pointy ballet pumps at the moment (with bare legs). And I also have some slingbacks if I want to wear heels.

I'm going to get some lace up shoes (like Churches but a few hundred pounds cheaper) and low heeled ballet pumps for when I need to wear tights (I really love these https://repetto.com/en/products/camille-ballerinas-black-v080ve-410-en (but again need to find something cheaper). I already have knee boots and ankle boots I can wear. I can't wear trainers to my office, but I got some from Air & Grace for my last job. Cos and Me & Em always seem to have smarter trainers in.

Camille Ballet Flats - rubber sole

The Camille ballerina echoes the shape of the iconic Cendrillon, except this time it is set atop of a small heel. Although still just as comfortable and elegant, it will complete a classic look or be twisted with trendier pieces.Material: Nappa calfski...

I also got these. The sole doesn’t look as thick in real life

Those churches shoes are nice but I once bought a car for less!
